Dual VCO interference with drums

Has anyone noticed how the Dual VCO messes up the sound of the analog drum engines? Perhaps its because the dual VCO utilizes the analog drum engines? Maybe it’s a stupid question but it bothers me that I cant have the analog drums sounding good while playing along with the DVCO. Seems like each of the first 4 tracks are interrupted by the DVCO.

You might have to remix it due to compressor.

What do you mean with that? I guess the dual vco were always there under the hood.

They were, unless Elektron can magically materialize items into their customers units. Still trying to hear from someone who knows what I’m talking about though.

The DVCO can only be hosted on the first 4 tracks, not sure what you mean by interrupting the drums. I will say the DVCO is VERY beefy and if you are not careful with your resonance and filter settings, you may be creating a lot of sub sonic mud that could be eating up your headroom. Easiest solution if that is the case is to use the channel output and mute it from the mains, track it separately so you can filter/eq out the problem. Otherwise you could bypass the internal compressor if it is reacting too hard and use a compressor plugin. Hope that helps.

First, excellent answer and I appreciate it. I am aware that the DVCO is only on the first four tracks which is what lead me to believe that it could be interfering with the analog drum engines, the drum engines on the first four tracks, that is. I think the DVCO uses the actual drum engines, just in a different way. I felt like the DVCO was almost robbing some sound from the drum engines when the two play simultaneously but it’s probably more to do with what you suggested. I will try to mess with it when I get home today but I’ll probably have a couple more questions, hope you’re around! Thanks again.

Yes, if you choose to use the DVCO machine on a drum track then you cannot use a different machine (kick, snare etc) on that drum track.

Perhaps you’ve got the DVCO on the choke group?

If your using heavy LPF compressor settings it will definitely suck the life out of the mix. Have to be very careful with the beastly bass!

Hey Peter, I’m aware of that but thank you. What I was saying is that if the DVCO is running on track 1 it will interfere with track 2 that has a snare.

I do exactly this and have not had any issues with interference.
Can you post an audio example to help us understand and identify the issue?

Have you tried recalibrating your Rytm?

This sounds like it might possibly be an issue related to gain-staging. First, try removing any master FX from the signal path. Then, try lowering the gain on all the sounds, and seeing if that improves the balance.

I do believe @knobgoblin unveiled the most obvious suspects in their post. If there is homework to do first, it’s in such direction.

I have not tried recalibrating the Rytm but I wouldn’t want to because nothing else is wrong with it. I think it may be some related to what knobgoblin said but I have to wait til I’m home to test it out.

I’m not talking about erasing sounds, kits, patterns, projects.

Recalibration resets the oscillators, from the manual:

13.8.4 CALIBRATION
The Analog Rytm calibration routine is found here.
Calibration will start the calibration routine for the oscillators and lters. After selecting this option, a popup window asking to con rm the calibration will appear. Press [YES/SAVE] to proceed with the cali- bration. Please note that the calibration routine takes quite a while to complete.

But yes, look at other possibilities first.

Honestly I’m only concerned about recalibrating because of all the problems people report with their Rytms and I feel like I’d risk something happening to mine, but I’ll look in to it. Thank you for the suggestion.

First thing I’d do as a few others have suggested is turn the mix knob on the compressor section all the way to the left so it’s not active. If that clears it up then redo the other compressor settings if you want compression…

Finally checked it out tonight. Compressor was maxed out. It’s like a whole new sounding instrument now! Pretty ridiculous but yeah, I’m still learning this machine. I hadn’t even gotten to messing with compression yet. Thank you all for your suggestions.

Get to know the compressor and it will make those beats pop :purple_heart:
