I am putting together a live setup (see graphic) and struggle with volume levels and signals. I have only recently started to use an interface (Scarlett Focusrite 18i8). I am wondering if I need different cables or if its just the (output/input) settings of my gear. Interface signal will be sent to a regular Hifi system in the end, no mixer or professional PA, but I need the interface to record the session and combine all the signals.
I am having trouble getting a decent level out of my Octatrack when connecting it to the line input 5/6 of my interface. The signal is way too low, unless I crank up OT main output to about +40. But then I get quite a lot of noise that is unbearable especially in quieter parts. Track levels being sent out via OT main output are already set to 127 with volume in SRC being set to default level.
Signals from Microcosm-Specular Tempus also require a boost on the interface’s instrument/mic inputs 1&2, which again causes noise and makes the mix of OT main out and cue out sound odd, even if the interface output levels are equally loud going into Ableton: DN & DT signals coming straight from the OT main output lack character and lows compared to when I send them to Microcosm and Specular Tempus via OT cue out, even if those pedals are not activated. I also have to set cue out levels for thru tracks receiving DT and DN signals way lower than main levels, which can also cause problems in a live setting.
So far I am using standard mono TS cables for left and right outputs and inputs (black lines in graphic). Except for the Microcosm, where I use a Y TRS plug stereo cable connecting OT’s two Cue Outputs to the one combined stereo input of Microcosm. Microphone (Shure SM58) output is also mono (XLR out of mic, 1/4" reverb pedal in), but output of the reverb pedal is two mono TS cables again. Would replacing all the TS cables with TRS cables solve the problem? Also not sure whether to set Microcosm’s input to line level when receiving an OT cue out signal (do OT main and cue out both send a line level?). Or whether I have to adjust input settings on the interface via its dedicated app.
Manuals from Octatrack and Focusrite say that:
- Octatrack outputs and inputs can be used with either TS or TRS cables
- Focusrite Line input 5/6 is balanced, but can be used with either TS or TRS cables
I guess solving this problem from afar could be quite complicated as there are many factors involved. I hope you can help me anyways, thanks in advance!
