What do you think is the better combination for a live techno setup? I’m considering combining my Digitakt with a Digitone or combining the Digitakt with a TR-8S. In your opinion, what is the better approach? Personally, I’m leaning more towards the TR-8S.
You could go either way. One is a powerful, hands on drum machine and the other is a powerful FM synthesizer. Apples and oranges.
Salute!
Have fun w the decision!
Do it. I’ve got one. Best drum machine ever made.
I’d say dt + dn. The tr8s is a powerful drum machibe, but at the end of the day you can get samples inside the dt (samples from mars has a huge collection of all the x0x).
The dn would give you a totally different dimension, and even if fm is not your cup of cake (i know it isn’t for me) it has a huge collection of presets you can play with and use clean or edit.
Idk to me dt + tr-8s sounds a bit redundant
I have all 3 of these machines. On the other hand, qvoid, I could argue dedicating tracks on the DT to TR samples (if only playing live with 2 machines) is sort of under-utilizing what makes the DT great. I agree from a sound pallet perspective, the DT+DN provides more variety.
The thing for me with all the 3 going, which live together in my studio, is that the TR-8S is the go to ‘drum only’ unit. The thing I’ve always loved about it is the fader/mute interface, with a couple knob controls. Simple. It’s very interactive and easy to bring drums in/out to a precise degree. And if you dedicate assignable FX knobs to filters for instance, then you have pitch, decay, and filter per track to mix in live.
Similarly, a thing I love about the DT performance wise, is that the mixer page reflects the 8 encoders. So, you could also have a very clear rig of 19 tracks audio going to mix live.
All this stuff is so personal, obviously. And depending on how many DRUMS your style of techno entails, then there could be a case for the DT+DN.
Also an idea, could be to get a cheap DN now that people are liquidating, and use midi from the DT to control a TR-6S. Personally I have no interest in a cramp machine like that, but just saying. If you have the budget, that could be a more compact way to fold in TR drums to the setup with out devoting so much of the DT to it. Anyhow… thoughts.
Depends on your needs. In my setup DT replaced TR-8s, but that’s just because I have fairly simple and static drums and I needed a setup centerpiece, not just a drum machine. But as a dedicated performance oriented drum machine TR-8s is IMO better. Did you consider TR-8s + DN?
Love my TR-8S but to me it would be a lot of overlap with the DT. I would probably go with the classic DT/DN setup. There is a reason it is so popular.
dt+dn for sure
Same workflow same short cuts combo’s
Bigger sound pallet.
If you are using outside midi to sequence the TR-6S, do you lose the ability to use some of the TR’s features like motion recording, I wonder?
