Drum sound design with the MnM?

TiB gave a great tip years ago, to get all tweaked out: set a track to be a BBox machine … play with retrig settings musically while an LFO effects the Pitch parameter of the BBox in a random fashion. (i think set to run ‘free’)

Very nice work! The MnM and A4 actually make excellent partners in sonic surrealistic journeys of vast possibilities. Still learning as am primarily a classically trained keyboardist and although will never cease using my various synths and DAW, have been venturing outside the DAW as far as Elektron and new to me Spectralis, to act as supporting layers in ambience.

I just wrote a piece using one monomachine for drums, one for synth parts. I was fairly happy with the results (as basic as they are). You can hear what I created here (almost all drum parts are using FM+):

Very well done. I like the percussion very much.
This is a good demonstration of the sounds I’ve been looking for when I bought MnM.
Still finding my way around it but immensely enjoying it so far.

thanks, was a 1 mth adventure into song mode with a brutal sometimes guttural digital sound and patterns
pretty disorganized tho, had to do maths to get the arrangement tight

Thanks everyone Sorry for not responding sooner, I hadn’t been visiting this site very often.

I’ve been wondering whether there were good ‘FM’ based drum machines out there (perhaps the machinedrum can do a great job of this), but I think you can do great things with the Monomachine on this front. The last piece I wrote was pretty slow, but shows you can do decent drum kicks and snares using FM+

I made a new piece using this same setup, but included more BBox along with the FM+ and Noise and I really think you can do awesome things with the monomachine as a drum machine. It might not be as complete as other drum machines, and I wish you could do retriggering with other synth parts like you can with the BBox, but if you mix the different modes, you can really come up with neat drum sounds and beats.

By the way, be sure to use the Arps to add to the drum parts you do create, you’ll be surprised with what you can do!!!

can´t stop thinking about buying a second MnM…

i had wished the new machine was NOT the AR, but somekind of improved MnM with two more/new machines, OT´s sequencer and MD-UW´s samplesection, CTL-ALL on top plus double MIDI-Out…overbridge…
drooling and daydreaming.

still i LOVE my MnM for what it is and for me it´s a real keeper, while the MDuw MkI had to go. never looked back.

@dekalboy, I got a ‘broken’ monomachine for less than $300, got it working again, but had also bought a working monomachine… Really, I use it for that mostly for the novelty, to show that I can do it, to show what anyone can do with the monomachine.

I would like to get a machinedrum, but they’re expensive and out of my price-range currently, so… I have fun with my two monomachines. And I don’t think it does a bad job of doing drums either. I’ve had quite a lot of fun experimenting to create percussive sounds with the monomachine!

Awesome! I think I’d caution getting a second one, unless it’s for a great price. I think it’s doable to get it to be a drum machine, but since I’ve never used the machinedrum, I can’t say how much BETTER it might be (and probably is). It’s more designed for the process… But if you stumble across a good deal for the monomachine, I guess I wouldn’t hesitate then!

If I found a MkII at a good used price, I’d be tempted to jump on it, but I’m in no great rush. I have the MDUW as well and it is excellent, but some of the features on the MNM like the arp and different trig modes can lend themselves to some unique sonic territory. I would probably use more of the effects if I had another 6 tracks of Mono goodness to work with :).

yep, exactly with the MnM you can get from simple to really complex drum beats if you tweak it good. it also depends on what you’re looking for when you create rytms … now, if i only had a MD it would be even better

edit: i usually tend to experiment with synth engines which are not designed to make drum beats. the vocoder can be pretty good in doing rythmic sequences so is the superwave

Does the machinedrum work more similarly to the monomachine when using the BBox? Where you can retrigger the sound? I might just have to do some more research on the machinedrum, though I suspect it would be better for creating drums!

You can retrigger certain machines, and samples can be retriggered as well. Great for drums, but also great for bass and lead sounds.

if you do end up with a machinedrum, you can control it via the mono’s midi machines. sending mono arps to the md is a whole new percussive world unto itself.

Just got a second MnM for a crazy deal to use as my main Drum Machine - still feeling it more than the MD and OT (which i just sold). FM kicks sound super great. Tweaking up a new kit called “Metroplex” - still needs some editing but it is starting to sound a little something like this…
Sounds better with the flanger tweaked and a bit more reverb also but I’ll get to that later.
