Drum sound design with the MnM?

The only synthetic drum sound that I’ve had trouble with on the mono is good solid kicks.

New MnM owner here and a fan of percussion synthesis in general. I’m getting nice deep, bassy kicks out of the GRN Sine machine with a one-shot pitch LFO. Another LFO to quickly open the filter with a high resonance for click.

I’ve heard clickier, and I don’t have the MD, but I’m quite happy with what I’m hearing.

Snares I’m finding more difficult., as the number of synthesis parameters is less than I’m used-to. Usually I would use three separately-controlled oscillators , but this isn’t possible on the MnM.

So far my efforts have been focused on using the SID machine and modulating the waveform from Triangle to noise using a exp one-shot LFO. As of now, I’m tending to stick with samples for my snares, but any MnM synthesis suggestions would be welcome.

As regards other types of percussion, I’m finding that MnM a joy to create quality electro percussion sequences - digital zaps, burps, fart, etc. which is exactly why I bought it.

Though the arpeggiator has been a wonderful surprise.

You’re probably also going to get a better idea of what Lem can do with a Monomachine Only ( with OT as an FX processor / mixer no samples etc) if you watch this.

I wanted to add or ask what sort of percussion you where looking for.
For wonky, skewed, FM and noise based percussion the Monomachine is quite good indeed. It also excels at using synthetic sounds in more percussive ways for odd melodic grooves (if that makes any sense) and isn’t too shabby 8BIT styled percussion also.
It isn’t going to sound like an MD as much as the A4 won’t either but I find bot units cover a fair amount of ground in the electronic percussion arena. I find the A4 very good a clicky / static like percussive clips, ripples, and fizzy things.
How’s that for a rather sad description ?
I tend to be a tad biased as I adore the Monomachine sound - it always brings something unexpected to anything I create which is why i love it so much but I digress.

Excellent work! I like the percussion in this track a lot. I was on the fence in deciding between and A4 and a Mono machine a couple of weeks ago and this is one of the videos that pushed me over to the Mono Machine side.

i really like the way both machines fit together and the sounds that come out of them. all nicely done. once more, the MnM is a great piece of synth/esis!

TiB gave a great tip years ago, to get all tweaked out: set a track to be a BBox machine … play with retrig settings musically while an LFO effects the Pitch parameter of the BBox in a random fashion. (i think set to run ‘free’)

Very nice work! The MnM and A4 actually make excellent partners in sonic surrealistic journeys of vast possibilities. Still learning as am primarily a classically trained keyboardist and although will never cease using my various synths and DAW, have been venturing outside the DAW as far as Elektron and new to me Spectralis, to act as supporting layers in ambience.

Very well done. I like the percussion very much.
This is a good demonstration of the sounds I’ve been looking for when I bought MnM.
Still finding my way around it but immensely enjoying it so far.

thanks, was a 1 mth adventure into song mode with a brutal sometimes guttural digital sound and patterns

I’ve been wondering whether there were good ‘FM’ based drum machines out there (perhaps the machinedrum can do a great job of this), but I think you can do great things with the Monomachine on this front. The last piece I wrote was pretty slow, but shows you can do decent drum kicks and snares using FM+

I made a new piece using this same setup, but included more BBox along with the FM+ and Noise and I really think you can do awesome things with the monomachine as a drum machine. It might not be as complete as other drum machines, and I wish you could do retriggering with other synth parts like you can with the BBox, but if you mix the different modes, you can really come up with neat drum sounds and beats.

By the way, be sure to use the Arps to add to the drum parts you do create, you’ll be surprised with what you can do!!!

can´t stop thinking about buying a second MnM…

i had wished the new machine was NOT the AR, but somekind of improved MnM with two more/new machines, OT´s sequencer and MD-UW´s samplesection, CTL-ALL on top plus double MIDI-Out…overbridge…
drooling and daydreaming.

still i LOVE my MnM for what it is and for me it´s a real keeper, while the MDuw MkI had to go. never looked back.

Made one myself with MnM as drum machine. Not as good but check it out.

@dekalboy, I got a ‘broken’ monomachine for less than $300, got it working again, but had also bought a working monomachine… Really, I use it for that mostly for the novelty, to show that I can do it, to show what anyone can do with the monomachine.

I would like to get a machinedrum, but they’re expensive and out of my price-range currently, so… I have fun with my two monomachines. And I don’t think it does a bad job of doing drums either. I’ve had quite a lot of fun experimenting to create percussive sounds with the monomachine!
