Drum & Bass Battle: GREENSLEEVES 50th EARTHSTRONG!

We’re wrapping up the year, and as a thank-you to everyone who’s taken part in these battle threads, I’m unwrapping a challenge that I’ve been looking forward to since I decided to bring back these battles way back in winter.

Greensleeves Records Turns 50!

And a blessed Earthstrong it is! Of all the little record stores that could, Greensleeves has always held a special place in my heart. Founded by Chris Sedgwick and Chris Cracknell in West Ealing, London, exactly 50 years ago, the tiny shop would soon become the record label that unleashed dancehall on an unsuspecting world. Greensleeves brought us the sounds of era-defining producers and DJs. Rhythms that have ripped out of cars and clubs ever since. The likes of Junjo Lawes, Yellowman, Scientist, Roots Radics, Augustus Pablo, John Holt, Barrington Levy, Sizzla, Dr Alimantado, the best-dressed chicken in town no less. So this month we dive deep, fishing for samples in one of the richest rivers of recorded music.

So this challenge is very simple:

  • Post any track released by Greensleeves records in the thread.
  • Use a sample from the thread to make a drum & bass or jungle track.
  • You cannot use a sample from your own post!
  • (I mean, honestly, go ahead and sample your own post if you want no one will care.)
  • Keep it under 6 minutes!
  • Send me a WAV/AIFF/FLAC by End of Day
    Friday, December 26th!!! NO EXTENSIONS!!!

And an original rocker

Eek-a lives less than a mile from me in Stockholm now. I never meet him at the pub though so I can suggest a collab

Interesting lyrics for one shots, and very usable instrumental parts starting from 4:05 onwards

Gonna sit this one out, not a mad fan of working on sample based stuff to begin with and I feel like reggae/dub samples in dnb have had their time already.

If anyone wants a hand with mixing or mastering again let me know.

Yeah I’m gonna have a break this month too, just cos I need one though to be fair… Silly season has started early at work, between that and family commitments I’m feeling a bit burnt out… looking forward to the playlist though… :+1::pray:

Great idea. First I was not really convinced, that this will work for me. I thought that I don’t really like Reggae-music, but I have already found a few tracks that I like:

November/December are also busy for me, but I will try to stir something up. @Symian I will definitely miss your entry. @alexleigh83 I will miss your entry too and I appreciate that you offer to help us out.

Thanks, I think I just need a month out to chill and noodle around with my mpc and focus more on family time, hope to be back in the game next round…

Hey KD, what are the rules on outside samples and instruments for this one? Should the entire track be derived of samples from the above material or is it ok to use other samples, instruments etc?

Amazing to find this gift sitting here at the end of the year. Planning to give this a go. Here is one I found of early Junior Reid at a record shop in Montreal

And a riddim that took dancehall to another level:
