Drone synths

I don’t have any advice except to say it looks like a fun setup - having those faders to control the operators and carriers is like setting up your own version of the opsix. Bet it’s a lot of fun playing!

Since you have one, how do you feel about the AK for drone stuff? Do you use it for that at all, or do you feel it’s suited for drones? I’m waiting to see if Elektron comes out with any new keyboards but an AK is pretty much at the top of my “want” list

Take a listen:

This is a drone EP I made on International Drone Day this year using only the Analog Keys. On the doomier end of the spectrum, and using only two tracks and the fx track. They are a little rough, in the spirit of the event, but it might give an idea of the sort of things you can coax from an AK from scratch over a few hours.

No way anybody recommended a Lyra in a 305 page thread on drone synths.

Sound only demo video for an earlier prototype for an analog drone synth called Quord from Sound Workshop.

And here is an explanation / demonstration.

The Magnetar from Synamodec

A distortion sort of drone. This company makes some nice stuff and is very much under-appreciated.

Spent 3 hours in the last two days with my new Befaco Oneiroi. Best drone synth I’ve tried. Not played with the Solar42! The Befaco is awesome because of all the mod inputs. So many. Just endless possibilities. In love.

Hrmmmmm, @Jeanne I’m sure you’ve mentioned elsewhere but do you have a preference between the A4 and Digitone 2 for a little more droney and timbral-focused performance?

Here’s noise doom drone with the DNII: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14MolI9eogU&t=691s (Only one track, and no Masteroverdrive used to make a point). Most of the other tracks in that vid also have weird drone-y sounds in them as well as granular and glitchy effects.

Even more drone stuff in this post: Introducing Digitone II - #1785 by Jeanne

The Advantages of A4 over DNII are: Effects can be modulated, the Neighbor Machines and the performance mode.

However, I’d still choose DNII because of the extreme rich palette of timbres, be it with FM Tone or FM Drum, and the Karplus Strong of the Comb+ Filter.

To make the reverb more worthwile for Drones, I use an extrem long pre-delay.

on the A4 you can do drones with just the delay modulated and nothing else.

you do not need a DN 2 for drones…actually you do not even need an A4 for drones. you can do drones on anything really.

Absolutely not a need, in that yeah I can drone with anything I have with a long envelope and certainly FX.

I even have a sequencer!

Ok not really (stole it from Matrixsynth) but I was curious how Jeanne felt about those two in the specific context of timbre and modulation.

Got my DS-2. Boss just left. Threw it on my papers with my OB-4. 30 minutes of fun…can’t wait to get it home and try different modulations.

I just played around with it again and got it to a really nice rocking drone…wish I had been able to record it actually as I never seem to get any drone stuff to a good place where I’d want to share it but this with some drums would have been sharable for sure…love this little thing.

Not mine, and I am no drone expert, but it seems to me the Obie TEO-5 does a good job here. Or perhaps it’s because I want to buy one anyway…

The deneb from www.drone-department.de .

A mixed combination of five drone components, PWM, AM, FM, S&H, and Crush with multiple controls on each, plus a Subharmonic and Reverb. Still in prototype.

At Superbooth 2025

EDIT : Fixed broken link.

Still obsessing over Stylophone DS-2 and Dreadbox Typhon (and now Quord)

but just learned about the Forge TME - VHIKK X today:

I would want to buy this, but I am scared about the modular rabbit hole
