Dreadbox Nymphes

Hmm. I’ve left it in for hours. Probably won’t sell it yet.

i guess we all have different tolerances for these things. if i had a synth i was unhappy with, i’d sell it in a heartbeat!

I regret selling almost every piece of gear I’ve owned. What I noticed is that the scratchiness is much less pronounced bent when I use it with the ADG-1 analog delay, driving the input. So I’m going to experiment and a lofi poly synth that size is still appealing.

yeah i’ve mostly only sold gear for financial reasons / to upgrade to something better, and i miss most of the things i’ve got rid of over the years. with the exception of the Analog Keys, which i just did not like at all, and all the eurorack which just wasn’t pulling its weight musically in proportion to how much it cost me…

Hey, you might be aware of this iPad editor but thought I’d post this incase (I appreciate this is a year late!)

here’s something that’s really bugging me about Nymphes: saving patches and worrying that i’m going to save on top of a patch that i like. i can’t hold them all in my head. most synths have a “patch compare” function but i can’t find anything similar on the Nymphes. anyone got any tips?

No, they’re a pain to keep track of and I’ve lost some patches trying to save to another slot especially. Upthread I posted a .syx file that replaces the factory patches with an init patch, which for me makes it easier to scroll to an unremarkable patch, init, and start moving settings.

Or, the .syx is a pain to get into a first time but it’s not too hard after that to re-save all user patches as factory patches that can’t be overwritten, using a find and replace based on the description in the manual…

The manage of patches is a nightmare for me. I’m trying to use external program change but I don’t know how it works. The manual is confuse… Once you have your selection in the menu, do you need to press menu? Do you need to press save? I think the manual didn’t say nothing…

Also, I don’t know exactly how the program change works… Are the factory patches 1-49 and the user patches 50-98?

The main problem is that I don’t know in which patch I am. It’s very very confusing. I’ve seen the original video of dreadbox but most of the times I don’t know where I am

i’m on V2 firmware, sending program changes from my Octatrack and i’ve found the patches i’ve saved are in 1-49

Thank you very much, then it seems that the user patches are the first 49.

Has anyone posted about Shoebridge’s editor? With the cv companion “module” it gets around the preset management issues as well as lets you see all the fader’s actual values (both standard and “shift” levels)… that plus all the modulation possibilities in the software make it very compelling.

So is the front panel actually pink-ish? Thought it looked more white online and wondering if the used unit I bought is alright.

No, it’s white. The pink is used in the box and the marketing, but the actual device has blue and white colors only.

(Or, well, at least the one I got had white and no pink. It was preordered after launch, so part of the first batch.)

Cool, just wanted to make sure! I also really like the style. So did Dreadbox change the design in later versions?

So I bought the Nymphes used (amazing how cheap they are available) to see if it’s a good synth for a jamming with others/eventually playing it live. I still have to decide on that but I definitely had a lot of fun with it.

The funny thing is that I used it with my SH 01a more like a multi timbral synth with layers by accident, because I couldn’t get SH‘s MIDI output to work as a thru, so notes always went to both of them. That was a really interesting experience in the end, I will explore this further. With their small footprint, it’s a bit like a multitimbral synth like Rev2 but with hands on control for both layers in the same footprint.

It definitely sounds quite close to the Roland if you don’t make that much use of the LFOs. I was surprised by how close you get to the typical SH leads and basses almost by default on the Nymphes with short envelopes. The sliders and wave forms also help to navigate both at the same time without being overwhelmed.

However, once you bring the LFOs into the mix, the Nymphes quickly starts to sound very different. I‘m still a bit torn on zhe controls for LFOs though. I think the shift function works totally fine overall and it’s not the deal breaker that people on the internet make it sound like, imo. I love how you can quickly assign LFO2 to any source by just touching the destination slider. You get these evolving patches really fast. However, I would have preferred it if they put LFO delay and fade onto the menu button and made rate and waveform of LFO2 the shift function. Seems a lot more intuitive to me and also the functions you would want to change more often than delay and fade. Great that fade and delay are available though!

Always having the high pass is very useful, especially as a modulation destination. I‘m overall really impressed by the Nymphes. I think if I decide to use it more in jamming/live settings, I will try to avoid presets. I find it very confusing to select and save them. And the controls are not optimal for seeing what the patch does, maybe that’s why many people complain.

I’ve been watching some videos on the Nymphes lately. I’m close to hit the purchase button. Thanks for the review!

What about the Envelope « issue » people are talking about, in particular the Attack? Has this been addressed? Did you notice it?

I don’t know about prices in Canada, but for the 300€ you can get it in Europe (used) it’s an absolute no brainer to me if you’re not in financial troubles. I think it’s such a nice sounding and kinda bread and butter synth that it sure can never hurt to have that small thing lying around. That being said, I don’t think it can do anything your current setup can’t do.

I think the envelope issue was fixed in an update. I did notice some noise and clicks at some point, but that might have also been because I had a lot of weird rhythmic stuff going on with combinations of backward saw and square LFOs. In general, it did behave a bit odd at times, also with tuning. But I‘ve only used it playing live jams for three days and I‘m sure all of that can be solved in a studio setting with a bit of investigation.

I was thinking as a portable Poly for Live duties.

Thanks for the response! :heart::pray:
