Dreadbox Artemis

Those pics have been taken when the Artemis was warmed up (at least an hour). I’m aware of warming up Analog Synths. My other Analog Synths (Sirin, miniKORG 700FS, PERfourMER) are all tight on tuning.

Yeah I figured but it was worth asking. The other thing that comes to mind (since I don’t know how the Artemis handles the autotuning) is that when I got my Prophet 5 I had to delete the tuning calibrations that were already in there and start from scratch because they were throwing it off. Is it possible to delete calibrations on Artemis to start from scratch?

The only thing you can do is Tune > Start from the Menu.

Gotcha. Yeah sounds like a case for Dreadbox support then, I can’t imagine that’s normal.

does that actually do anything? when I’ve used it, it takes no time at all… other synths i own take quite a while to tune everything

You’re right, it takes a few minutes but the fact is, it’s annoying to tune it every now and then. It’s unreliable. I wouldn’t rely on it for Live performances.

I see, thank you for the info.

I tested mine out. I apparently hadn’t been initiating the tuning correctly in the first place. Prior to tuning, it was considerably out of tune.

Once I figured out how to properly tune it, the tuning showed between 0-2cent when using the default patch. I tested each oscillator shape as well, mixing volumes on both Osc 1 and 2, and found 0-2cent to be consistent. 0 at the highest register, 2 at the lowest.

I then played around with it for about an hour and a half. Afterwards, I checked the tuning, and it was the same as when I tuned it earlier.

I plan on letting it rest for a couple hours. Later this evening I will try it again, from a fresh start and then after 15 minutes.

I hope this information is helpful. Initially, it implies to me that your experience is different than mine. We shall see.

Thank you for the tests! I, unfortunately, sent it back to the store.

No worries! I believe you made the right decision. I suspect yours was a faulty model at this point.

It sounds good. Does it sound Prophet 5/10 or Obie Ob-x8 good? No. Not even close. Not a fair comparison, but just an opinion. For most people that doesn’t matter. it sounds great in a modern way.

I think these words are kinda meaningless, since everyone has a different understanding of “good”, as you already acknowledged.

I think we should stop discussing this as how “good” a synth sounds compared to another one. What makes more sense to me: does it sound like an Oberheim or a Prophet? Nope, but it doesn’t want to sound like that and you shouldn’t buy it if you’re looking for that exact sound. Does it sound like a Dreadbox poly synth with Sinevibes effects? Yup!

Just wanted to update regarding my explorations with the tuning.

As mentioned before, after tuning I was seeing between 0-2ct. This was acceptable.

I left Artemis on, and returned two hours later. Tuning had deviated further, 5-7ct.

At this point, I set up a sequencer loop and left it running another two hours. When I returned, it was between 10-17ct.

I don’t know if the tuning waivered due to heat from leaving it on that long, or what. I should also mention that the room Artemis is in remained a consistent temperature, ~72f, with humidity controlled to ~40%.

I don’t know if this is normal. But I find it acceptable for my own uses.

Although I’m not an analogue synth guy, I always thought this kind of behaviour was part of the charm?

Depends, a lot of modern analog hardwired synths have tricks like temperature compensation and autotuning and barely waiver at all, but my modular VCOs tend to be a lot more all over the place. Moving 10-ish cents in 4 hours is pretty good, really.

Yeah, Im not complaining. Was just checking to see if my unit was experiencing anything similar to Tchu’s.

By any mean I wanted to put a shade on Dreadbox. I have a great respect for this company. Their products are top and they have a signature Sound. It was my first time experiencing a bad unit after all these years.

Sorry yeah I didn’t mean to imply that you were, or that I have any stake one way or the other. Flukes happen, I just wanted to figure out if it was something I should worry about. Also, to share my process of testing in case others were wondering.

Oh no, what you did is perfectly fine. I just wanted to document what seems to be an isolated case.

Looks like my Artemis will be going back. Turned it on today and the screen is dead. LED’s are working, its outputting sound, the knobs all work just a dead screen. Regretting not backing up my sounds that I’ve made. Seems to be a few issues with this synth and screens.
