deffo good to know your gear - i have og dark trilogy and a few old roland and korg analog things which is pretty comprehensive - and opz for travelling…
I’ve just taken pictures and getting ready to list the last of the “small” things (the last two big things being a large pair of monitors and an infamous 19” rack parallel preamp/filter/compressor/saturator/eq box) and
I feel relieved about everything except the Octatrack. I’ve got to sell it for a lower price than usual because the little plastic ejector button for the CF card has snapped and that makes it tricky to get the card out (doable with a pin though…).
But it’s not so much about the price, as the fact that it has been my trusty companion on the road and in the studio for the last four years and I’ve learned it fairly well (considerably more so than most other hardware I’ve owned). I also know that there is so much more to learn on it, if I wanted to and had the time. Alas, the iPad and Loopy Pro/Koala is just more practical for my stage of life…
Without sounding too dramatic it feels kinda like mourning both the loss of a close friend and also a part of one’s personal identity that no longer applies.
I’m downsizing since a little time.
I mostly sell some effects pedals. May be it’s the same for you but the only way to know if a pedal can be good for me is to buy it as i can’t try it anywhere.
Time’s ago i mostly make music on computer due to financial situation. In parallel i always played guitar. After i bought a little modular synth et made some drone albums with it as i lived somewhere i didn’t find people to play the music i like.
After that i buy more stuffs, the “best hardware music station” i had was a digitakt. I keep it two years and sell it, not really like the workflow. Bought a yamaha rs 7000 but can’t figure it out…
I sell the modular and bought a vintage korg ms20 that i have since.
I’m always tempted to buy new stuffs but realize that it doesn’t made me make more music. in fact the thing that kill my GAS is when i’m playing with my band, with real peoples and not machines. But even here i sometimes have too much stuffs. I played guitar and had a big pedalboard. Now i have less pedals and it’s great. I have some amps (play with two).
Playing music with acoustic instruments also kill my GAS for “gadgets”. I play also hurdy gurdy and bagpipe. That take time and i have less to watch forums and new gears.
The last gear i bought was a machinedrum uw+ mkii as i’d like to make a new project with rythms.
My goal is to have few gear, know it well and be able to record with a good quality. For me GAS kill creativity and make me unable to work. Be in search of the perfect gear, perfect tone doesn’t allow me to make music and have great time.
Don’t be fooled i’m a perfectionist but more i aged and more i face that, 1. I mostly make music for me and it have to make me feel right and 2. Nobody cares of my work (certainly untrue as some peoples after shows are really enthusiast) but it’s in a little diy/alternative scene so it’s not touching a lot of peoples.
Since i played shows with my band, making music alone and put it on bandcamp don’t really excite me. Live is great, volume is great and even it can be stressful it’s a great way to share it’s music.
If i have to play solo set i can’t image bring a lot of stuffs as it’s too prone to technical issues. I want to keep it simple.
So downsizing it’s all about it for me.
Two more devices tested and both end up staying as I ended up finishing a project with one and the other one just seems to inspire me to do unconventional things.
And the winners are?
Ask me again next year. I have sworn to not help ppl get GAS this year. ![]()
I have similar issues to you. Obviously nobody can really tell anyone else what they need, but for what it’s worth I’d say that I find the Livetrak L6 so useful and versatile that for I think most people it would be an error to sell it. Whether I’m using it as a mixer, an audio interface, a portable, battery-powered recorder or a midi interface, it always comes in handy and never lets me down.
Absolutely word I ran live sound for a whole room with 2 live sets and 3 DJs at a packed NYC show with just the Livetrak L6… I was petting it and thanking it at home later… in all my downsizing the L6 will always remain ![]()
Too far or not, I’m now down to a single organ. Haha.
Well, full sized, i still have my reface yc for combo sounds and anything i want to do outside of the house if i don’t want to take a 300 pound instrument with me. Scrapped my 1963 Wurlitzer 4300 last weekend and I’m taking the husk to the dump today. I fixed it as far as could be done without spending money on it but that wasn’t quite enough to get it fully functional. The parts will go into many, many future builds and repairs.
I’m keeping my weird and funky Baldwin until some other free organ can charm me out of it but its pretty awesome and the matte waterfall keys feel so good!
