Double pressing problem?

Neat, I was still on 1.40B, and had my control board replaced on the keys already.

It’d be interesting to see how they addressed this in the firmware, though obviously that’s not a part of Elektron’s process

Mine is cured, it would seem.

OS 1.42A has also fixed mine. Amazing – wish they had fixed it earlier though, I haven’t used my Keys in ages because the double pressing problem was annoying. Also glad I never sent it i for repair!

Mine too now, this is so good!

Yeah dude. Total stoke.
The double pressing problem definitely diminished the quality of the DNK experience.
Time to unlearn all the careful tiptoeing I did with my fingers in futile attempts to prevent it from double pressing!

Double press issues are a hardware issue that can be ameliorated in software by introducing debounce time, basically delaying the registered input a little to get past the on/off spikes as an electrical contact is made in the switch -

So Elektron will have just increased the debounce time to ‘fix’ this issue, which means that there’s technically a little more latency for inputs than there was previously.

The problem though is the use of these type of switches, all electrical contact based switches have this issue to some degree. The ones Elektron use seem to be of a lower quality than the ones you get in most mechanical keyboards, rougher in feel and seemingly more prone to chattering (the term often used for the above phenomena).

The proper solution for all manufacturers is to stop using electrical contact based switches and potentiometers, contact oxidation and wear is inevitable and usually happens well before anything else on the machine dies. There are alternatives such as hall effect and optical designs, those two have become very common and popular in the mechanical keyboard world in the last few years, even on lower priced boards.

Contactless sensing has a massively greater lifespan, and at least in the case of hall effect switches those require no debouncing because they have hysteresis (the actuation point is below the reset point in the switch’s travel) so unintentional double presses will literally never happen. I happen to be typing this with an electro-capacitive switch keyboard which also has hysteresis, every press feels perfectly responsive and deliberate and will continue to be as such for many many years.

Given the price of these Elektron boxes I would really like to see them move to contactless switches. Aside from giving them greater lifespan and general reliability it would also prevent some of the warranty and support headaches.
