There is something to be said for new experiences of our youth hitting harder than movies seeming “familiar” or “been done” as we consume more media over time. I feel like I am always chasing that high of hearing my favorite bands for the first time or seeing that movie that formed new pathways in my brain.
I feel too much in real life. I watch movies that just make me not feel the same as the real world, thus I have crappy taste in film. Ha!
True, and it doesn’t have to be forever to be real. I get those feelings from other instances now. Experiences with people I care about. Getting lost in music and/or art. And to be honest, my old man was a movie critic so I was watching all “the right” movies as a teenager. It made me hate the television. I had to change my expectations from movies to begin to appreciate them. I’m not at all telling you that is what you need to do in the slightest. I just got to the place where if I wasn’t thinking about bills and war for 1.5+ hours I was good.
Haha. I didn’t want to go there but yeah, some of those films were great, but I think Fight Club is overrated, John Malkovich is ok but also overrated. I loved Magnolia when I first saw it, but I watched it again a few years ago and it made me questioned why I liked it so much - it wasn’t bad, I just think I may have been in a place in life that attracted me to it. I hated the Matrix when it came out, and I only appreciate it a few years later. Eyes Wide Shut is meh. I cannot stand The Virgin Suicides and anything Coppolla has done, but shit dude, I really want to like work for some strange reason.
That goes to show that it’s all a matter of perspective. The assessment above is all on me, it is my truth not the truth of the world. It’s not that these films are objectively bad, is just that I don’t think they are not for me.
Yea, quality movies are few and far between these days. I’d say the same for shows. There’s much more variety now but shows worth your actual time, ehhh not so much. Though I’m thankful for when an incredible or just super quirky show or film crosses my radar.
We’ve reached peak content, and I’m sure a renaissance of some sort isn’t too far off… I hope.
Heavy Topics
I love horror, and Heritary is brilliant, so is the new Suspiria which I argue is better than the original. There are some banger movies out there, the problem with YouTube critics unlike proper ones I argue like Kermode is that it’s poisoned by the cultural wars.
The thing that upsets me about the current state of film is streaming networks not putting out hard copies of their movies/shows. I get that it could decrease their subscriptions, but I am legit worried about not being able to go back and watch Ted Lasso when I’m 60 because Apple TV+ went the way of iTunes.
*I already stated I have bad taste so save your judgement
I heard this is fantastic! Might have to pony up and get Apple TV for a month.
I got three months free for buying a new record player. I’ve watched the show like four time through. It’s just pure feel good medicine imo.
I hate to say this, but Apple make some banging TV content. Silo and Severance are excellent.
I didn’t want to be the first to say it. Silo was fire! I loved Foundation as well. Really enjoyed Tetris, prolly for nostalgia sake.
Also Blade Runner 2049, Drive, Inception, Whiplash, Under the Skin, Mad Max Fury Road, Midsommar, Scott Pilgrim Vs The World
There’s so many great movies that have been released alongside with some colossal stinkers too. But that isn’t new since every decade will have its stinkers as well.
I think there are good movies and shows. But the vast majority is shit as with any product. Old movies are tested in time, so you know the good ones back from 1999. Nowadays its that you gonna watch many crap stuff till you get to the good one
For those feeling jaded about current movies and shit,
GO WATCH NIMONA AND WOLFWALKERS AND STFU*!
ok.
*That is meant to be a friendly ‘stfu’, not hostile.
Dude I can see people saying Nimona is woke, its absolute class though. Book is better though.
Yeah isn’t that because we have access to said content easily, and said streaming platforms have to to keep updating content to keep subscribers?. I do have a fondness for the 80s since I grew up in that period, and most of my favorite movies are from them too. But then I watched a lot of crap from the 80s as well which is pretty dire as well, though this is more horror centric.
Motion pictures are in an absolute horrid sorry state. Production and Advertising budgets are so enormous that every story has to be completely watered down and appeal to the broadest possible “audience” for studios to make any money. Take the Avatar series for instance. Meanwhile Barbie masquerades its capitalist leanings under the mask of third wave feminism, just don’t question the “need to keep shopping.” While Chris Nolan cranks out another low dialog loud soundtrack remake of 80s Robert Duvall’s A-bomb story FatMan and Little Boy, that no one asked for. I could go on, but you have to admit 99% of films have been absolute or near garbage.
Recommend checking out the Critierion Channel for a bunch of great and overlooked films, including a whole section with Audio Commentary to stream! I’ve been re-watching many of my “old” DVDs for the commentary alone, which is sadly missing from every other streaming service.
I am looking forward to Dune 2, despite Blade Runner 2049 disappointing.
Life goes on, and there’s plenty of 80 year old Noir films for me to enjoy for the next few months!
Absolutely not.
I think its the other way around. They saw that big movies in cinemas dont make the profit they wanted, so they started investing on netflix to make crap movies and shows in batches. The proof is that before netflix there was popcorntime and i was a big advocate for it, but people back then when not so interested in watching stuff that way, so much. After netflix got the budget bump then ads started coming and people got addicted to it. Sure the visual quality is up a notch (so to be more addictive) but in general the themes they introduce are mostly unoriginal and boring for most moviesa and tvshows.
Its the same as the synth industry nowadays. Its not that you need another clone or another analog synth, they just bombard you with synth vids all day so you go and buy one.
