Now I want to buy ND. What have you all done?
Should be a great combo for percussion in combination with DT.
Some FM Drum and Wavetone sounds I’ve been making on DN2 - not meant as any kind of ND3P comparison, just as an example of how punchy the DN2 can get…
A custom made DN Keys ? Now that’s cheating.
Actually, you know what’s cooler ? It’s removing parts of a synth, like our dear friend @UserFriendly did with his ND3P.
Could have been cooler if the decided to sell module version that they announced at launch. The esthetics of the pad version is downgrade compared to the ND2 with those trigger buttons and pad indication lights. Why not add a USB port for midi and audio as well? Right, its an instrument for performers, not programming musicians.
Was talking about Clavias approach to how they see, produce and market their instrument range. Agree with you that it might be a missrepresentation looking at how many here have their products and using them for programming and studio duties rather than performing.
The DN2 FM drum made me think of the Korg Volca Drum, more than Nord Drum
It’s all about the banging!!! ![]()
Here’s where I started this insanity…
Notice the ND3P in the back, at the time I couldn’t figure out how to get it to fit in with the midi controls I’d developed.
I abandoned this behemoth as it took forever to get it set up when I wanted to use it.
I’ve been searching for the best, most responsive, impulsive setup I could build since then.
Until the DN2, my best was the Roland MC707. Another amazing device that’s almost perfect.
But man… The DN2 is just about perfect for me I think. So far to show-stopping gotchas in terms of it’s ability, etc.
So I think I’m getting close to the final form or what I call The Wank-o-tron. ![]()
The current incarnation with the DN2 added:
I’ve got a different drum module on the way so I can use mesh pads. When I get more comfortable I’ll prob post some vids…
Whatever you do, DON’T get ripped off by the scalpers selling ND2 for over $1000. The prices on those are insane, when you can easily find a ND3P for close to or under $500.
The ONLY advantage of the ND2 is the ability to plug in trigger pads directly. But you can get cheap brain modules just to use as midi interfaces that are better anyway.
Clavia has really been AWOL on the percussion front for years now for some reason.
My ultimate dream was to have Elektron and Clavia meet each other in town and work on a joint project with Elektron’s interface and Clavia’s synth approach.
Now I think DN2+external pads is gonna be the closest we get to it.
But Clavia still needs to come out with an 8 voice ND4 with class compliant multi-channel USB audio and a normal midi implementation, individual outs, etc. Something modern.
yeah, feels like they abandoned the pure synth part as well. Haven’t seen a Nord Lead in a while. Happy with the NLA1 keyboard and rack module but there are small improvements to be had on those as well.
They seem to focus on their flagship Stage models now that there are other larger players like Korg and Yamaha trying similar concepts to take market shares.
20% Off Fors modules. 8th - 24th Nov.
I haven’t heard a lot of woody tones from the dn2 yet, just from listening to online recordings. I struggled to get those out of the DN1 because it goes too quickly into metal/glass territory. If you know of any youtubes or personal patches that have woody tones please post them!
Messing around with a single instance of Opal
I gave it a try from scratch, wanted some marimba, but DN2 put a skin on the tone…ended with this…
(FM TONE / Comb-)
Edit : a stock patch called Woody Mood
I wish I knew what I was doing with my DNII.
Got the DNII through the door today and gave it a compare to the ND2. Really different, but really complimentary. FM drum has a lot of sweet spots to work around as starting points but the ND for me is a lot more precision within a narrower overall palette. The ND for me has been the best sounding drum synth I’ve owned, but it’s a pain to sequence, personally have always just bounced out sample chains to shove in a Rytm. Can picture DNII will provide some stunning layering up to the mix
Awesome I like yours. Even gets into pvc pipe territory, blue man group style.
There are also differences in the attack generation of the sound and more parameters exposed to midi cc, to be really exhaustive. ![]()
