I recently got a DNII and I’m interested in learning how to design drum/percussion sounds with it. I understand the basic building blocks, but I’m struggling on how to combine them.
I’d appreciate any video/document/whatever I could read to learn more about it If it’s DNII focused better.
Focus on FM Drum.
I find it the easiest way to synthesize drums.
Try to master the basics first.
For kick, lower pitch to -2, use the pitch envelope parameters, you got the base.
Change slowly the other parameters to see what they do. Wavefold, or change oscillators.
A bit of transient.
For the snare, add noise, possibly some FM.
For hats you can basically only use noise, the rest is to your taste.
These are the basics. Play with the rest of the parameters to see where they lead you.
The FM part gives you new harmonics to enrich the sound, but you may not need it at first.
You can use one with a short envelope that quickly decays to 0 to shape the attack/transient. And keep the other one for the body of the percussion, with a slower decay, and possibly with some remaining harmonics.
Then you can explore other territories, go for more abstract percussions.
And use other sound engines/machines.
