I’ve got two chords, maybe a bassline, but definitely bongos.
Out of interest are these bongo etc samples royalty free?
Well, I looked up the publisher (High-Fidelity Recordings) before I posted the link, and they’re long-since defunct. Last release was in 1967 and no one seems to own it now. No ASCAP or other info on the disk or sleeve. So I think the samples are safe?
JUST ONE MORE DAY
TO GET YOUR SUBMISSIONS IN, FOLKS!!!
(though, since it’s a long weekend here in the states, if you send it to me at some point tomorrow, that’s fine too.)
I’m done just doing a bit of mastering. Might be tomorrow if that’s ok
Just had a bit of a moment, opened an old project that from last October that’s only a bare skeleton of an idea, it already slaps my submission into a cocked hat and it’s only 16 bars long, never mind I’ll save it for the next one, I’m excited to hear what you all came up with, one more sleep
Actually managed to get it done, submitted!
Done!
Done! It’s not gonna give Photek or Squarepusher a run for their money, but at least it’s got 100% more bongos than any of their classic works.
Excited to see what everybody else came up with!
Last chance, folks!
Thank you again @KingDuppy for organizing and your support.
There a thousand things I might want to improve but at least I have put a track together.
I tried to make this happen but didn’t come up with anything I liked. Next time…
" Use samples from the same LP to make a jungle or drum n bass song under 6 minutes."
Now you tell me! Had I known I coulda submitted a jungle tune as well, I might have gotten something worth submitting done. DNB is just too darn technicaly demanding for me to deal with, since I am mainly more into techno/house/elektro etc genres
oh well. Best of luck to all the contenders!
Ha, I submitted a tune and I don’t really understand the difference!
Well then, you’re invited to submit something next time!
In all honestly, I really don’t think anyone will judge a song harshly because it doesn’t stick rigidly to genre tropes. This is all about inspiration; everything else is up to you and your personal taste.
For instance, if someone submitted a song that’s a clear winner but it’s only like 158 bpm or whatever, I don’t think anyone will demand that it gets disqualified because it’s 3% slower than “proper” jungle or drum n bass “should be.” If you listen to the hip-hop challenges, there are plenty of entries that I’d say fall more into the funk, house, electro, or breakbeat categories. But they still take inspiration from hip hop, which is what counts.
The goal is to make the music you’re inspired to make by the challenge—that’s really it!
TLDR:
Genre is a mental construct! Free your mind and your ass will follow!
Fair enough. For me personally, drum and bass and jungle are two very different things - one revolves around samples, the other is a more “synthy” affair which can even be made 100% without samples. But when it comes to tempos, I’m not too fussed, anything between 150 and 200 would qualify. So I’m not saying these things are super rigid. Anyhoo, until the next challenge! My personal faves are #4 and #7 FWIW
