Honestly… this is my first time hosting a battle, so I’m not sure… But I assume that’s fine.
Just send me the file however you prefer, and we’ll figure it out.
But be aware that it if the file is too big to post here or on SC (still figuring that part out), it may end up going through Reaper or iTunes’ mp3 converter before others hear it.
Declicked those samples last night and got really inspired by the content! I’ll definitely try to cook up something with these sounds. So much good stuff in here. Certainly more than enough for one track, anyways…
Anyone else wants declicked versions of these, DM me
I’m definitely starting to hate them, struggling to make them sit well in context with the rest of my beat… think I’m going to have to go for individual hits rather than the patterns
I spent this entire weekend trying to cook something up and everything sucks ;p. Started with hardstep, finished with liquid funk. Managed to squeeze one bongo pattern into the beat as a top, now I’m trying to do something with the dude’s voice :). Working only on my Digis, so pure DAWless.
Fun thing I discovered about myself during this time is that I really can’t (as in, do not possess the skill) use samples in the traditional way, i.e. chop and place on the grid. Everything quickly starts to sound off key and I can’t control the chaos. This time I managed to make something but usually, and that’s the fun part for me, i take a sound and mangle it to the point it doesn’t sound anything like the original.
Anyways this is fun. I feel the exact amount of pressure I need, and even if the result sucks at the end, it’s a learning experience :).
Thanks for doing this! I had a half finished track that was lacking something, made a couple of samples from the loops, stuck em together and it’s sounding pretty good now.
How’s everyone doing then, got the bones of my track done, still haven’t finessed the bongos in though lol, haven’t really made anything in while so this has been challenging… I’m glad the deadline was extended to be fair, I’m definitely going to need the time…
I’ve got a couple track skeletons but nothing I’d be happy sharing. I still need to try my idea of building an okay break out of the bongos. I’m confident i can do it, I just need to make the effort.
I haven’t done anything new, but I did use the bongos to breathe some life into a couple old abandoned sketches that I wasn’t happy with. We’ll see if one of those ends up being my entry.
I was planning on posting one of those sketches here but then work got hectic. I’ve been too tired and burnt out to play music at night, but maybe it’s good to give my ears and mind a rest.
I’m done for the most part, Ngl it’s been a headache, at least I can spend the next few days trying not to agonise over the details and the mix, it sounds okay on my consumer bt cans so it’s passable for now… gonna try and hold off on submitting til the time limit cos I know what I’m like, @KingDuppy would probs end up getting an abundance of revisions
OK, I’m done. If I hear this track one more time, I will go to a bongo store and play bongos with my face.
Decided to upload now, so everyone can have a really nice low skill ceiling baseline and feel encouraged to participate :P.
Things I got to know about myself:
I’m super glad I took part and plan to take part in future battles.
I am unable to finish tracks without external pressure, but when I feel it, I come to hate the track I’m making because it feels forced. Somehow, I still feel like powering through this because after a couple of rinse and repeats, I believe it will pass.
After a while, I loose any semblance of objectivity. I do not even like this track anymore, therefore I do not know if it’s something someone would play in their car, Guantanamo Bay, or at all.
Bongos, man, bongos.
At the end of the day, this is the first track I made since forever. I made dozens of loops, jams and sounds, better and worse, but never anything even slightly resembling being arranged. Because of all that, I don’t know how to arrange and mix. I mean, yes, I do know more than your typical passerby, i.e. the basics, but that’s all. I need to focus on that at some point and actually doing it helps a lot.
About the track:
It’s a weird mix of jump up and liquid funk – I could not decide where to go with this.
Drums are made on the Digitakt II.
Bassline is made on the Digitone II.
The melodic stuff is a mix of Digitone II, Arturia Analog Lab, and one sample is from loopcloud.
The thing was arranged in Ableton, where I also added some additional effects (chorus, reverb, basic stuff).
