DN1 sysex into DNII: compatibility issues? [implemented in OS 1.10]

From above

Agree

I just have issues with the special sound pack you got from registering you OG DN. You got all the presets for Digitone and the Digitone keys and they only came as sysex file. I like the DNK presets and want them in my DNII now :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I have some Killer DN1 sysex presets and i can’t use them in my DN2. It’s crazy that i need a DN1 (which i sold) to make this work lol

Glad I found this thread. I just got my DNII last night and had tons of DNI packs in a cart ready to buy… Guess i’ll wait.

So did I understand it right: it is possible to send old DN1 sounds to DN2, but it’s a doggy process and needs Transfer in order to translate/export the old DN1 sound into a file format which can be feed into DN2. Right?

You can use DN1 files as long as they are not sysex files. If they are sysex files, someone with a DN1 needs to convert them for you to a dnsnd file.

OR you wait till the kind people at Elektron update Transfer (if ever, but chances are they will because they confirmed they’re aware) to do the conversion for you.

Nothing dodgy about any of this.

This omission still baffles me…Having all those presets and tracks carefully backed up and not being able to reimport them… :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

If somebody wants to DM me with Venmo id, I would like some old Dn1 project files converted into project formats. Probably 5-10 files total.

Thanks

I helped @daemonix to convert his old sysex sound files and the process was super easy to do:
First send the old sysex to my Digitone mk1, then in Transfer select the sounds and ā€œSave to Computerā€, this automatically generated the new dnsnd files, that DN2 needs.

This should also work for the projects, right?

@PAPANOONGAKU do you still need help?

That makes total sense, but I don’t have my old Digitone anymore. Just the mii . I could go out and buy a used digitone just to transfer the files, or I can give somebody 50 bucks to do it for me.

That’s fine if it’s not proprietary sound packs, as noted above this is not condoned here. If somebody has a problem with a sound pack they have to arrange this through the vendor. We can’t be seen to be supporting file sharing/redistribution… it’s also why we don’t permit redistribution of sound packs on used gear. Yes, we realise this seems harsh, but this policy exists for a good reason, so we would like to remind you(all) that requests for sound pack conversion should neither be requested nor granted. Thanks for understanding, we (@Mods) have to abide by licence terms which invariably do not permit redistribution.

I don’t care about the sound packs. I have all those. I’m just looking to get about a dozen of my own projects restored. Is that still an issue?

Only you can answer that, i’m only reminding/referencing the possibility that if proprietary content is redistributed (as is) it likely contravenes terms on its licence. If it’s adapted/incorporated and changed then that’s not something i can comment on, it would not be obvious, but it may or may not be an issue for a given vendor.

Put another way, nobody has any knowledge of your project, so it’s impossible to pass comment. If, at one extreme, a project was just a collection of imports it might raise an eyebrow to anyone concerned with the content. But it’s nothing we can give counsel on nor police. What you are asking for seems reasonable from the outside, but as we point out in the areas where this is discussed it’s all up to the person posting to be aware; if it’s clear to a third party that their content is being shared it crosses a clear line. Nobody can have any concern over an owner’s nondescript project.

We’re not looking to create roadblocks, just ensuring that there’s a clear understanding on a manufacturer’s forum that we abide by any relevant licence terms. We aren’t reading the terms, members from the community made us aware that these terms exist, how granular they get is anybody’s guess, but i’d be surprised if they touched on content that was incorporated/adapted etc.

I appreciate the thoughtful response. For what it’s worth, I respect user licenses and intellectual property of creators. It’s something I teach my 14-year-old about when he starts talking about video game companies or other companies that exercise their rights as intellectual property owners.
I just want a few of my old projects (probably only 2-3, but I may as well process them all.
