DIY Korg MS-20 (Full Size)

Korg, you absolute beauties ! This is undoubtedly the absolute shit and I will be getting one. Had the mini version on my want list, now it’s this.

Yeah, did not see that coming. Including both filters is genius. I am in awe of Korg right now.

Wow. I shrugged off the Monotrons, the Volcas, and the MS-20 mini. Korg may just get my money on this one.

Gotta love Korg! Didn’t see this coming at all…

$1400… makes it less exciting to me

The price for a pseudo “DIY” kit is making me think it’s actually marketed to nostalgic yuppies (80s pun intended) rather than musicians. At that price one could not only get a decent and serviced vintage MS20, but two MS20 Minis and throw a Volca Beats on top of it. Even if 1/4" jacks and front panel mounted pots justify a higher price, this limited edition looks like a rip off to me.

So no thank’s, I got the Mini already and besides that it would be nice to have larger, higher quality jacks on it, I also realized the MS20 could be a bit overrated after all.

That’s about right. The sound of the MS20 justifies the price of the Mini but not much over that. It’s a fun synth but hardly what I would call versatile.

There will only be 1,000 of them according to Sonic State (compare that to the MS-20 Mini that’s already sold over 10,000 units), so it’s mainly for collectors and synth geeks. If you look at it and think “but you can get the same sound for less than half the price” (I know I do) then you’re most likely not in the target audience.

It’s a shame though that this is apparently the only analog Korg are showing at NAMM, unless they’re hiding something in a back room.

Agree completely!
For that same cash, you could get the new Moog Sub 37, which is a VERY versatile synth that has everything that was immediately missing from Sub Phatty, as well as advanced arp and step sequencer. and whether one “snaps an MS20 together or buy a mini”, you can guarantee the moog is built for lifetime abuse. For that price, you could indeed buy the original on ebay. The original MS20 had the most crappy keyboard because it was MADE to be a budget synth at the time that just like the TB303, et al, just happened to sound great and both caught on much later and thus drove prices up.
However, kudos to Korg! Would much rather see them make a modern Poly Six or something completely new, not beating the Triton Engine into yet another incarnation, as they just have done yet again.
