@alpspolar just got one
I did indeed. They are in stock at Schneidersladen The Division Department - 01/IV | Drum Synthesizers without Sequencer | Percussion | Schneidersladen - Modular Synths
I’m in the UK so had to pay import but it came to the same amount as what they are listed for at UK retailers like Elevator Sound (£660 but no stock there).
Certainly not cheap and could most likely get it cheaper if willing to wait but I’d done a fair bit of research on this one and how I wanted to use it in my setup and decided now was the time to jump in, especially as they don’t seem widely available still. The approach of the machine with it being 4 voices you can shape into whatever I think gives it longevity as well.
I love it so far. Only had it a few days so I’ve kept it simple just triggering the four voices, no FM or layers yet but will get to that. Pairs great with the Digitone of course. Feels easy to dial in the simple sounds but you can tell it can get crazy with the modulation options on the unit and the midi implementation.
Hi,
Has anyone tried out these m4l devices yet?

Can the voices be played with a sustain phase ?
I see there is a drone mode, but is it either an infinite drone or a predefined hold stage ?
Yes it can be played with a sustain phase.
Both infinite drone and predefined hold stages are made possible using two settings:
-
setting the ‘Target’ switch on the drum synth to ‘AMP’ (infinite drone)
-
in ‘Repeat’ mode, you would adjust the ‘Depth’ and ‘Mod’ knobs accordingly (predefined sustain). If you set both knobs to max, then this would be another way of achieving infinite drone.
But since the device meant to be sequenced externally anyway, I find it easier to predefine the sustain length using the external sequencer instead of the drum synth. But good to have options!
Not sure we’re talking about the same thing.
To make it clear, if you control it with a midi keyboard, can you have a note sustaining as long as you press a key, and then enter the release phase when you release the key ?
Basically, act as a regular synth voice.
Yep! it can do that.
Thanks for the clarification ! I love to play with note lengths on drums, and it’s way better to do it with midi note length rather than triggering a CC associated with each note.
I emailed The Division Department today (via their enquiry form) to ask whether…
- a new version of the 01/IV is on the way
- a completely new instrument is on the way; or
- The Division Department itself is closing / going on hiatus.
Will let folks know here when / if I get a response.
no response yet?

It’s been a bit over six months and I haven’t heard back. Admittedly, I haven’t chased them for a reply as life had other plans.
For me, since the 01/1V first hit the scene a myriad of boutique, compact 4-voice alternatives have emerged. If a new version ever arises, it will have to do something special to stand out from the crowd.
