Discuss: Gear you bought while intoxicated—how did it work out?

Disclaimer: Obviously we are all responsible adults here, and would never spend irresponsibly.

Having gotten that nonsense out of the way: Ever bought anything while substances had … lowered your inhibitions somewhat? And if so, how did the “decision” play out in the long run? (Is the high mind sometimes the wise mind?)

Going first: The one I remember is buying a Tanzmaus from Thomann’s in Europe (I’m in California). Generally, I don’t buy from small companies in other countries; buying from Moog across the US is scary enough (images of shipping a Matriarch 3,000 rough miles for repair).

I clearly remember this transaction because I remember posting about it at GS; the thread title was something like, “I just bought a drum machine from another continent while drunk.”

How it worked out: I don’t regret it. The Tanzmaus kick drum is so, so pretty. I wouldn’t say I ever fully internalized how to operate the box, limiting its everyday use, but I like it, I want to keep it, and as far as I know it hasn’t broken since I last powered it up … which is a good thing, since the company (sadly) pretty much died with the founder.

p.s. If I had been drunk enough to buy the $500 working Memorymoog many years ago, (that I passed on because I had $600 to my name), I might be a happier man today. (Or not)

Your turn.

Elektron Digitone and Rytm MK2 still enjoy both greatly.

Is there a story to the transactions? Or just a cold, clearthinking purchase while totally wasted?

You know, I’m more likely to spend money on gear when I’m clean and trying to be sober, that’s when I have the most money and feel itchy like I need to fill a void. If I’m intoxicated, I’m usually thinking about how to get more intoxicated, but when I’m sober for too long (weeks, months, years) I start combing reverb and other less respectable marketplaces looking for something that will go nicely with the rest of my impulse buys.

Ha! Like Charlie Parker trying to stay off heroin by drinking …

Buying synths is one of the safer highs though, unless you lose your house to the credit card company.

probably something like that.

I’ve said it before but it’s a lot easier to buy a synth in the middle of the night than it is to find drugs. The door to enablement is always open as long as you know where to look.

I might have decided to buy the Syntakt back when I was drinking. And the Model Cycles before that…
No ragrurts.

On a long enough timeline…

i bought a Digitakt while very drunk in Taipei. it was premeditated but i was spending 85% of my monthly income on it and i got juiced to go through with it. ironically, the idea was that if i had some music hardware to focus on, i would drink less. that didnt happen, and i was incredibly broke for a handful of months after that. it might have been incredibly important for me at that time, it was a rough period and that was my intro to “serious” music hardware. glad i did it, glad im not making those kinds of choices anymore heh

Such as…

I’m in the market for “less respectable”…

I do not think I have ever sobered up. Looking at my music room, I must be intoxicated not to be willing to get rid of any of this shit.

If I were thinking straight, I would have sold that Abyss months ago. Or those extra basses, that extra euphonium, the second bass cab. Or that fucking modular set-up that I just made.

Can we include drugs?(As alcohol is a drug)

If so it helps me make decisions easily which is a good thing as im terrible at this. Whether i keep it is irrelevant as i can send it back under returns policy. So its a good thing for me.

Playing synths is safer and way higher, in my book.
#NGNY taught me a lot, like to never buy while drunk and wait a month before buying.

Then there’s a sale at Chase Bliss a bit before New Year’s day, and I end with a lovely CXM1978 because it’s 25% off and I might have lowered my inhibitions indeed…

I never dry bunk but there’s almost always this slightly out of control roll the dice kind of feeling to the bigger music gear purchases that I don’t love. Like deciding a particular purchase can be done logically and rationally, but actually going through with it still feels reckless.

definitely safer and less expensive than general aviation and flying single piston aircraft! I have zero regrets about learning how to fly an airplane and getting my private pilot license but very expensive hobby I had to quit. Same for scuba diving. I love synths and guitars can play anytime, fixed sunk cost and no risks.

Still drunk from the night before, went to get some food but forgot what I’d gone out for and came home with a minitaur.

Never regretted the purchase although I sold it a few years later after getting a lot of use out of it. Currently on my 3rd or 4th.

I tend to buy gear about 15 minutes into when my Ambien kicks in. Hey, at least I’m not driving my car like some people do. Ambien shopping is probably what keeps our economy going.

This is why I only snorkel. With very little prep I’m already out there floating over coral while the people at the shore check all their gauges and don catsuits!

I just miss out on the spaceman feeling of going wildly deep.
