Digitone Vs Analog 4 SOUNDS?

Glad you could disprove me. That third one is exactly what I thought would be a struggle with the A4. Props.

Found among my tracks one example of very characteristic A4-ish sounds. Arguably it would be difficult to replicate in DN/DN2, but not impossible. Raw complex pulsations… to accompany the melodic and rhythmical basis on DN4, for example.

(I mixed bass badly here, originally it was much deeper and louder).

this is exactly my experience. the sweet spots for parameters are tiny, you have to be very fiddly and precise.

I have a DN and would love to have an A4mk2.

I tried it at a friend studio and I absolutely love it.

I was coming up with different sound palette to be honest and I found the fx track of the A4 an incredible sound design option - it is not on the DN 1 and not even on the DN2.

I also prefer the form factor of the A4 more.

I think it is more inspiring

Can’t repeat often enough that DNII is on a whole another level than OG Digitone. New Filters, Overdrive routing (which when it is changed is similar to Filter Overdrive), new machines (Virtual Analog Wavetone Machine, Supersaw Swarm) …

Co-sign this. I’ve just got mine but it’s immediately evident.

Also, I’ll be that guy (ugh) and say that I never got on with the a4. I struggled to get sounds I like out of it.

I think that if you’re looking for a very characterful sound or an approachable (think knob per function) analog synth, the A4 is not the best choice. If you’re willing to work for a sound, accept a menu-driven experience and are eager to drive lots of sound changes with a sequencer, you should look at the A4.

If I were after an analog complement to the DNII, I’d look at Take 5, TEO-5 or sth similar. You can sequence them from the DNII and still have a disgusting 15 tracks of DN goodness. That way, you have the groovebox experience and the knobby experience.

(Of course, this does not fit your idea of a one-box setup, but my intention is to gently push against that idea :sweat_smile:)

I did that two years ago and I don’t have it saved as sound apparently. :scream_cat:

Back then I was pulling a lot of inspiration from @Ess free Mini FM pack. One trick I learned is to ping the second filter (keytracked to octaves) which gives you a fairly stable sine wave. Then modulating the filter frequency with an LFO. Maybe I used also one of the envelopes for the transient.

My hardware synths I ended up with after the usual game of buying and selling and trading stuff is a DN2, and A4mk1 and a prophet 5 rev 4.

The A4 is an addition I rebought one again maybe 6 months ago. I kinda missed it, I always seem to land something inspiring on one and I actually love the note stealing weirdness and lack of polyphony, as a groovebox, you work around those limitations, make your patterns work harder and it means the end results are less crowded and there’s more clarity.

I do like sequencing the P5 from the DN2 though, that’s magic and running it through the inputs as an external instrument.

I haven’t tried it yet, but the DN wave tone machines with a limited overall polyphony you could get quite close to an a4 workflow, you’d just need to set some artificial limitations.

Both the Syntakt and the DN2 should cover that no problem. Probably the DN1 too with a little tweaking. Dual sawtooths tuned to a fifth and a little sinewave LFO to filter cutoff and you’re there :slight_smile:
