Digitone similar to FM machines in Monomachine?

I haven’t spent much time with my Digitone since getting it a few months ago (mostly because I bought it the same time as three other synths which is fun but never a great idea). I’ve dug in a little and have made a few sounds on it but I’m not as familiar with it as my recently departed Monomachine. Out of everything the Monomachine did (in terms of sound) the thing I’ll miss most about it is the way the FM machines sounded, it was super easy on the MnM to dial up some raw Sega genesis sounds and extremely gnarly metallic sounds, obviously any FM synth can get into these territories but the FM machines in the MnM had a grittiness to it…is it possible to get those tones in the same gritty way out of the Digitone?
I plan on digging into the Digi more this weekend but I was curious if any of you have compared the MnM FM machines to the Digitone.

Yes, to some degree it sounds similar as both incorporate feedback and distortion. (Source: have owned and used MnM and DN)

I would say it’s all in the mapping of the underlying FM engine, the controls are pretty unique. But I suspect it’s linear FM and not phase modulation (like FM8, Digitone, Operator, DX7 etc) since it detunes the oscillator(s) when applying feedback. It also doesn’t reset the phase of the oscillators, so you’re bound to get a more ‘lively’ timbre than a lot of other FM synths which typically either always resets the phase per note on or lets you choose.
