Digitone II Tips & Tricks

i would love to be able to chain songs. but that being said ive just discovered that one pattern can be used to build a whole song, which is amazing!

in comparison with an MPC, you setup a main pattern, then copy it and set the track mutes. keep doing this for all possible variations and then chain the patterns in a song or a series of songs (aka song parts like intro + drop 1 + breakdown + drop 2), etc. downside is you end up with heaps of patterns and it gets messy.

with the Digi boxes, you can also do the above. but instead you can just have one pattern and then in song mode you can add new rows and setup the mutes in each song row. which actually S2400 does allow a similar flow but i must say the Digi implementation is really nicely done.

with the above in mind - a project can be very expansive. i.e. you can setup lots of different songs in one project which allows you to borrow sounds or structures from any existing pattern.

so my question is how does everyone treat a project? i…e what is the benefit of setting up a new project vs holding most your songs in one project? assume they mostly would share the same presets / kits if in one project - although that is also potentially handy to keep the sound consistent across songs.

i saw a video the other day on YouTube that suggested plocking a select few notes in sequence at 100% probability, and filing in the rest of the sequence with chatter. where the probability knob is now a generative fill/complexity control. but this didn’t take you 15 minutes to read did it

This largely depends on the genre and style of music you’re making. I couldn’t personally make a song out of just one pattern because my music involves lots more variations than just track mutes, such as changes in sounds, melodies, harmonies, b sections, etc.

If I was making an entire live set, I probably would try to limit the number of patterns per song to 4-8, that way I’d have room for 8-16 different songs across the entire eight banks of sixteen patterns. That should be enough for 1-2 hours of music, which would be more than I could handle anyway. :joy:

totally - you can have more variations in a song. but you can get quite far with just one well structured pattern.

for house / techno, for me the variations would be specific automations, fills and tricks for breakdowns. also my main use case of song mode is to have 80% of a simple song length arrangement to record and then tweak my synths / instruments live. The DN2 can take care of a lot in the arrangement which gives me freedom to properly tweak myt analog gear when i press record in Logic.

still debating whether i really need to add a DT1 or DT2 to the mix. im loving the Elektron workflows, but also wonder if that is because the DN2 can do so much in one box. Must get a lot messier adding another Elektron box when it comes to arrangement.

Has anyone managed to synthesize cymbals with DNII?

i think there’s some in factory bank B , start from here to learn

Exactly. Lowering the sample rate will lower the Nyquist frequency (= half the sample rate) which will lower the highest possible note.

Custom scale

Yesterday I was playing a handpan sound on Digitone 2 and needed to have the same number of notes and scale as my original handpan.
There is a typical Handpan scale called Kurd D and after a while thinking I realized that using the Chord Memory mode.
This way you can create the desired number of notes, note order and the desired scale.
It may seem a bit silly to use Chord Memory to play monophonic notes but normally a Handpan is not played with chords and in this case it helps me a lot when it comes to playing without confusing notes.

I hope this helps someone.

Best regards

Nice one

You need at least two Patterns if you want to utilize Conditional Locks together with Song Mode. This is because Song Rows of the same Pattern are seen as Repetitons of that Pattern.

I would love it if the Digis also received the OT Feature of adjustible starting Step. And, omg, if you could trigger Fill from a Song Row.

If you think of the DN2 16 Tracks as 4x DN1 Tracks you can easily compose a whole Song with Chorus, Verse, Bridge, etc. in a single Pattern.

Absolutely, anything can be done. Personally I would find that unnecessarily limiting though when there are 128 available pattern slots and kit performance modes available.

I’ve made a system for myself where I have consistency across songs across all 16 tracks, I find that to work much better for me.

That doesn’t necessarily mean that there would be no System behind that. I’m coming from the DN1 (still have it) and, as I’ve said, for certain Projects, I’m treating a single DN2 Pattern as if it was a Cluster of 4 DN1 Patterns while keeping their own internal System (for me e.g. 1st Track Kick & Offbeat HH, 2nd Track Bass & Backbeat, etc.).

Is there any way to COPY the CHORD MEMORY configuration of a track and PASTE on the track of another pattern?

I’ve been trying for a while on COPY TRACK PRESET - COPY KB SETUP options and there’s no way.

Greetings

I believe the only way to do this at the moment is to hold down FUNC to open up the config menu and set it to per pattern instead of per track.

This does not work to copy the Chord MENORY from one track and paste it into the track of another pattern…
At least I can’t do it, if someone can do it please tell me how.

Thanks for responding

I tested this out and the only way to do this is to copy the chord slot (trig1-8+copy)over, one by one, to the other pattern.

Shimmer reverb

30 second example of a faux ā€œshimmer reverbā€ I’ve been working on (fades in in the first few seconds).

Duplicate the sound to a second track.
Track layering → control the second track with the first
Settings menu audio routing → to main → mute the second track
[func]+[setup] → adjust the octave to +2

Now the second track will be up two octaves and only route to the fx sends. From there I’ve found you can do some finessing to make it more ethereal like adjust the amp release, add modulation to the filter or pitch, etc.

Thought it was fun and worth sharing :sunglasses: sorry it’s not an entire track, I’m too lazy to convert the OB output to something under 10mb
