Digitone II for SND/Mark Fell type music?

I often use randomized clocks with Elektron Gear. On OT, it sometimes stopped the sequencer and it was hard to used. But on OG DN, DNII and DTII, it responds way better and works pretty well even with a second box slaved to the first (a shift between the two boxes can however appears with very chaotic and abrupt clock changes)

That was for an installation, and the sound design appears to be credited to his son

ok, well i’m sure it’d be fine still

Thanks for the correction. I will give it a try at some point.

Could someone with a digitone post some videoes of Marks presets?
Are they just normal FM organ / other house things

very nice but I hear a difference between your track and the track from Mark Fell.

the track of Mark Fell ( SND -Topic) is quite calm, steady with very few elements, your track is very minimal with a click and cuts beat but there is much more going in terms of sounds and I find it a bit chaotic in comparison - good work though.

I kinda wish DN2 had some deeper physical modelling capabilities like Fors Tela or Chromaphone which Mark also uses. You can do some stuff with the comb filters on the digitone 2, but he primarily uses FM8 I believe, so the Elektron machine will get close to that. He’s all about rules processes and sequencing though and the beauty of making your own tools and approaches, I think that is the gold and why his stuff grabs your attention with needing very minimal materials.

For sure, his sequencing is really interesting. I’m not trying to copy the crazy sequencing though, too difficult for me

You and other people mention the comb filter, so now I’m thinking to just try that on the Octatrack. And really I’m just trying to find my own approach/source of making interesting sounds.

Sometimes I go back to this interview to get confirmation that it’s not about the gear

… which is completely irrelevant (arrangement/feel), since it’s about weird short sounds, and that my track demonstrates that you can do all kinds of weird short sounds (even morphing ones)

Also irrelevant - but since you brought it up, I’ll comment on that: I prefer my track over that of Mark Fell anytime (otherwise I wouldn’t have created it, in exactely the way I wanted it to be) :stuck_out_tongue:

When it comes to Mark Fell, sound design is no issue at all with a DN2. In fact, from a sound design perspective, it’s pretty much the perfect machine for that.

Like others have said though, it’s sequencing that’s going to let you down. Even with Euclidian and all the different trigs and locks and probability tricks the DN2 has, it’s not going to be able to achieve the sort of intricate and complex patterns that Mark Fell is famous for.

I think the thing I like about Max/MSP though is that everyone that masters it kinda makes it their own thing. It’s difficult to sound like Mark Fell, or Autechre, because it’s not just about buying a piece of gear, it’s about people building very personal and unique instruments over a number of years and refining it into a very personal workflow.

key subheading from that interview for this thread:

Don’t worry about what technology you need. Use what you have

i agree with the comments in here about SND sequencing regarding the DNII

with this track tho, i’d like to think a DNII would handle sequencing something like this just fine, i’d probably want a sampler as well for some of the textural qualities.
