Digitone and Digitakt MIDI loopback issue

I seem to be running into an issue that may only be fixable via a MIDI filter of some sort, but I’m hoping I don’t need to add another piece of gear to my setup.

Cable Routing:

  • DN MIDI Out to DT MIDI In
  • DT MIDI Out to DN MIDI In
  • DT MIDI Thru to Medusa or iPad
  • iPad USB MIDI out to DN/DT (only for pattern changes)

MIDI Channels:

  • Program Changes and FX control for the DN on 15
  • DN Audio Tracks 1-4 on 11-14
  • Medusa/iPad on 4/5

Controls:

  • Digitone - master clock/transport/melodic sequencing
  • Digitakt - MIDI A-B set as MUTE destinations/extra LFO for DN Tracks 1-4 (channels 11-14). MIDI E-G set as MUTE destinations/extra LFO for DN MIDI tracks 1-3. MIDI H set to 15 for FX control of DN.

The Problem:
I can’t assign MIDI E on the DT (controlling DN MIDI T1) to channel 4, because it causes a wonky loopback where the DN send channel 4 stuff back to the DT and then it just gets all messed up, so I needed to set DTM1 to send on ch. 5, and DNM1 to receive on ch. 5 but send OUT on ch. 4 (routed out the MIDI Thru of the DT) into the Medusa.

Am I missing something here? Do I really need to use up an extra 3 channels just to allow for this routing? I tried doing filtering and routing via AUM on my iPad, but the DT could not get a steady clock (on a 120bpm clock, it was going from 117-123 regularly).

If pictures or a video of the routing would help, I can make something up.

Maybe try deactivate midi input channels of some midi tracks (midi config) ?

What losgallos says. Deactivate all tracks you do not need to save up MIDI channels.

OR think about a less difficult setup that does not involve a loop. Like DN or DT being the master and then MIDI OUT to next device and THRU to Medusa.

I had a similar issue, using my AK as a sequencer also for external gear as it got that update 1.3(?) a while ago. Love it, but you cannot hear what you are playing when sequencing via MIDI. So when I bought the DN Keys I thought that could be good for MIDI sequencing but it would mean to rearrange the whole MIDI setup and I decided against it.

Only other solution I can see is to use a computer with MIDI interface and severals INs and OUTs so that you can created your setup. Or something like a iConnectivity iConnectMIDI that also works standalone and can filter and route everything to where ever you want

@losgallos can’t deactivate things I’m using. Haha.

@SoundReverend guess I’ll need to incorporate my MIDIHub into the equation for filtering.

I meant : do you have midi input channels configurated on the DT for the midi tracks (in midi config) ?

I have to or they won’t send out the Mute destinations. So if I want Track E to mute MIDI track 1 on the DN, I have to set track E to a MIDI channel to control DNM1. What I have now is that DTME/DNM1 is communicating on MIDI ch.1, but DNM1 then goes out to control MIDI ch.4. on the MIDI source page. It’s very silly. Perhaps Elektron can implement some sort of internal filter for this particular type of situation.

Or maybe you could get some kind of cheap MIDI controller only for the purpose to send mutes to all your devices… but then again you might need a thru box.

I mean, I could do it with my iPad. I’m already using it as a pattern switcher, but I don’t want to. Haha. I have a MIDIHub I can use if I need to do filtering, or I can use AUM’s routing/filtering on my iPad. The problem with the latter is that it causes serious BPM sync jitter between the devices.

What if you disable “receive midi cc” on the DT ?

I’ll try that when next session. That’s a good idea.

That worked as long as I turned off receive MIDI CC and notes on the DT, and just notes on the DN. Excellent idea. Thanks!
