Having replaced DN with DN2 I’m rethinking my setup and running into an issue. Current setup is DN2 L+R out into stereo effects and then into the A B inputs of Octatrack for mixing and looping.
The DN2 effects are really impressive, so I’d like to be able to select which tracks go to effects and which go straight to the Octatrack and was thinking I could do this by splitting the L and R outputs (L to pedal effects then to A B inputs, R directly to C input) but the send effects on the DN2 are stereo and bleeding into both outputs. So I’m not getting true L and R independent of each other. Is there a way around this? Should I be looking into making the pedals send/return on the Octatrack instead?
If you’re willing to involve a computer, you should be using USB audio out of the DN2 and only send the tracks you don’t want going through effects via USB, then return those USB tracks through an interface and back into the OT C input which is what you’re currently doing w/ DN2’s R output.
Everything out of DN2 which you’d like to have the stereo effects on, needs to be routed to main in the setup and use both the L and R out to the pedal chain then to OT A/B like you’re currently doing with the DN2 L output.
Since there’s currently no overbridge for DN2 you can’t multitrack the audio via USB, but you’ll still get a stereo mix of whatever you’ve routed to the streaming output. You’ll also need to make sure to select the option which allows audio to continue running to the mains/headphones while USB audio is streaming.
If you aren’t willing to involve a computer then probably this:
Otherwise, I don’t know that there’s a better way to avoid the problem you’re currently encountering. Maybe someone else has a more autonomous solution but I’m not seeing one.
Dual mode on the mixer page only impacts the inputs not the outputs so, unfortunately, it’s not possible to address the outputs as split mono like you can with the inputs (although you could hard pan tracks, but I don’t know that it will yield the results that you want).
I did get excited when I saw the dual mono mode in the manual but like you said its for the inputs only. I’m trying to keep the setup sans computer for live performance so I’ll look into the send/return from the Octatrack or limit my effects to what’s inside both boxes, thanks.
Yeah, it’s a real wasted opportunity to not have a setting for the outputs considering how hard people (me included) whine about wanting individual outs on the DNs.
Unfortunately, I don’t really have any other more creative ways around this, it’s kind of a hardware limitation. Good luck, hope it works out.
