I find myself chewing up tracks with drum programming on my Octatrack, and I really don’t want to re-sample as I like taking tracks in and out to create variation. I can create multiple loops, with permutations of percussive sounds - but it will get complicated.
I borrowed a Digitakt and really gelled with it. I also have a Syntakt- so for me, the DT was a hybrid Syntakt + Octa But! Now I started thinking, there are sometimes good offers on the OT as well. Maybe just pull the trigger with another OT? I don’t use Overbridge that much, what else will I miss out on if I just get a second OT in favor of a DT?
If you’re familiar with the OT and you already know you like it, then there may be some inherent value to doubling up on them. I always think it’s cool when people have duplicates of particular gear in their setup, I’m sure it helps with focus and workflow and all that good stuff.
But DT has Control All which is stupidly fun, and in general it feels like a quicker machine to get ideas flowing, so if that’s appealing to you then DT might be the way to go. Another big logistical difference between the two would be how long your samples are — if you want the freedom to use long as hell samples, then another OT is the answer. If you’re good with short mono samples, DT is back in the game.
There’s only one thing better than an OT, and that’s two of em.
Nevertheless the workflow and slight differences between the OT DT might be fun.
Port more basic non effects heavy stuff to the DT and still use the OT for the heavy duty stuff.
Personally I’d get a second OT
They will look ascetically perfect
Get the DT! You say you gelled with it. I use a DT/OT and it’s ace for drum duty.
I mean, a second OT would be great too, but I really like them both for what they are and aren’t.
Separate things, stronger together, amazing on their own. The DT is an amazing instrument.
I hate namedropping, even when it’s a pretty small name, but back in 2012 or 13 I was hanging out at Dave Auchenbach’s apartment talking about gear, and he said he always tries to get at least two of everything because two identical pieces of gear does a lot more than twice what one does (he said it better).
It’s absolutely true, although I can’t really afford to do it myself usually.
I’d either get a second Octatrack, or get something very different that fills in the gaps in the OT workflow (maybe an MPC). But really, I don’t think you’d be disappointed with OT+DT either.
I was in the same boat untill last week, doubting to get a second OT because of drum duties but got a sweet deal on a second hand DT. i’m really happy, UI feels faster (best elektron GUI imho) and i dig the DT compressor (like it better for drum bus compared to OT comp). CTRL all is the shizz. my only ‘gripe’ is that i cannot get the DT as filthy and deconstructed sounding as OT (bitcrusher + filter sat combo in octa is lovely), but ofc you can still resample and mangle in OT. if you can live with DT being mono samples and only gonna use it for drums i’d wholeheartly recommend the DT. that said i still might grab a second OT in the future
…get a takt…it will free ur ot from many backbone jobs, totally ready to explore new terretories beyond ur actual workflow…
besides the fact that catching new snippets from anywhere and overall resampling process becomes an easy charme by adding a takt to ur ballpark…
Nice! Did you pick up that pair for that screaming deal via a user on here? Either way…
I think you will like the pairing.
Digitakt is a super cool instrument, inspiring and fun to play. I’m happy for you! Congratulations!
No, it was from a local / Norwegian seller. I’ve been drooling over the DN as a poly synth companion to my Eurorack/Dawless setup for a while as well. So no I’m just broke and happy
