Digitakt MIDI Sanity Check

Hi guys, hoping someone might be able to help get my fairly minimal hardware setup working with my Digitakt (v1).

Along with the Digitakt I also have an OB-X8 desktop and a Nord Wave 2 as my keyboard.

What I am wanting to achieve is:

  1. Control the OB-X8 with the keyboard
  2. Sequence the OB-X8 from the Digitakt
  3. Use the Nord Keyboard to send midi notes to the Digitakt for recording sequences.

My MIDI routing is as follows:

Nord Wave 2 MIDI OUT > OBX8 MIDI THRU > DIGITAKT MIDI IN
Digitakt MIDI OUT > OBX8 MIDI IN

Would this be the best way to set that up?

Thanks guys!

No.
NW out > DT in
DT out > OBX8 in

Looks good, are you having a problem getting this to do what you want?

Sezare56 simplified it, but your way should work too.

Doesn’t nordwave need to send DT midi THRU in order to send notes/control OB-X8 (to pass through digitakt)? Or am I thinking about this wrong.

Definitely works for controling notes on dt with the nordwave, and for sequencing ob-x8 with DT, but he also says control ob-x8 with keyboard so I think it needs midi thru?

Something is missing here.
Using OBX8 in ?

OBX8 in is already connected to DT out

Unless OBX8 has 2 midi in, cannot work.

You can pass incoming midi notes (Nord Wave) though DT midi out if you use the corresponding midi track channel (MIDI CONFIG > CHANNELS)

  • Set Nord Wave channel as midi track MIDI CONFIG channel. This way you can select any track and play keyboard. You can use Auto Channel instead, but the track has to be active.

  • Set midi track SRC midi channelscorresponding to OBX8 channel

Thanks so much, I will try this and report back.

I guess one other thing that might be nice is sending midi sequences from the Digitakt to the Nord s as well, the Nord has 4 sound engines so the Digitakt could send 4 midi channels to it.

To have that would I do:

NW out > DT in
DT out > OBX8 in
OBX8 out (or Thru) to NW?

or woulds it be

NW out > DT in
DT out > OBX8 in
DT thru to NW?

ok so I have the Digitakt talking to the OBX8, all good.

The Nord is not talking to the Digi or OB anymore though. I originally had it setup with the Nord out going to OB in and without setting any channels or anything it just worked.

Now I have a track on the Digi set to Midi channel 1 and the OB set to Midi channel 1 and they are working together as expected.

Just unclear on what settings now in the Digitakt to have the Nord control it and the OB again.

Sorry if this is all very 101

I’d choose MIDI A track and set it to channel 9 in MIDI CONFIG > CHANNELS
(Channels 1-8 are use for audio tracks 1-8 by default)

Set the Nord Wave to the same channel (9).*

You can choose any channel between 1-16, as far as they are the same on DT and OBX8.

OBX8 thru > DT in
This way the Nord receives DT out (midi thru send back what comes in)

Beware of soft thru on the Nord (an option to use midi out as thru), and you may want to set it to Local Off if notes are doubled, receiving DT outs.

*You may want to use Auto Channel at some point…I’d try with channel 9 first.
