I’ve just upgraded my DT2 to latest os 1.10. I was looking forward to the new live overdub mode however this doesn’t appear to work. When I try to record an extra note in midi over the previous one it replaces the step with the new note instead of adding it to the previous note. Am I doing something wrong?
Hey, are you talking about using midi to record onto an audio track or onto a midi track? Just want to make sure of what you’re asking about because digitakt still doesn’t have polyphony on audio tracks (unless I missed something about the update also).
Just want to make sure you aren’t expecting the 2 notes to stack on the same audio track.
did you enable it in the personalize menu?
Yeah, I enabled it. Using midi only out to ext. synth in poly mode. I also tried the same with my digitone 2 and that worked as expected.
Can’t figure that out.
So step by step: I turn on the DT2, go to personalize menu, select overdub. I then create a MIDI track with midi out to an external polyphonic synth. I then enter the keyboard play mode. When I hit a chord the ext. Polyphonic synth plays as expected. I then enter live recording to key in a melody in single notes. I then play another melody on top of the existing, so the total polyphony only amounts to 2 notes per step max. However the new melody replaces the previous notes in exactly the same way as when overdub is switched off in the personalize menu. I have tried the same procedure using the latest version of digitone 2 and that works as expected with the same synth…
Same problem here. Just upgraded and it is not doing what it should…hmm
Phew, thanks Santo, thought I was the only one noticing this. On positive side all the other upgrades appear to work well:)
No one else with this issue?
Bytheway. Here is a video I made illustrating the point.
I have flagged this up with Elektron, no response as yet though…
Same happens in my box. In your Digitone 2 this works fine?
Yeah Digitone works as expected. Both instruments are wonderful overall, I just wish the overdub worked on the Digitakt as I use it a lot for midi sequencing.
It would be nice to know if it is just OUT machines or if elektron decided to make it like this for the takt
I doubt it’s just 2 particular machines but I’ve raised this with Elektron’s support - so far they haven’t responded to my youtube demo - one would hope either they’re trying to address the problem or formulate some kind of response as usually they are good for support. I’m rather surprised however that no one else in the community seems to be reacting one way or the other to this issue as presumably it’s not limited to just 2 machines.
…my suspicion is that (if this is affecting all Digitakt machines) it was simply a feature that got added along with the Digitone’s functional version, but not fully tested on the Digitakt2. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that Digitone is by definition a polyphonic instrument with a lot more Midi polyphony as well (16 notes I believe)
On all tracks (audio/sampler and MIDI), overdub will only overwrite the individual note.
Polyphonic overdub for MIDI tracks would be cool to have, but there’s no mention of this feature actually existing, only a dashed expectation
Am I missing something about the overdub function in DTII since at @bart video live recording seems to work the same way than OG does?
From Elektron’s website: release notes for the DigitaktII OS 1.10:
“Added an option to overdub in Live Recording mode, meaning recording on top of an existing trig does not remove the overlapping notes”. This is also mentioned in their promo video with Ricky Tinez.
As far as I can tell, the live recording behaves in exactly the same way as the OG, regardless of whether or not the Live Overdub option is enabled.
…unless I’m missing something.
ahh ok, looks like that digitone note got copy-pasted over to the digitakt notes without any change.
Yeah that’s what it seems like, but the overdub check box is clearly there in the Digitakt personalize menu so the feature is clearly intended to function…
…I’m quietly hoping Elektron are aware of this and their long silence in responding to my query means they’re working to fix it The machine is wonderful in all other respects and this isn’t a deal breaker for me, but it would be so nice to have overdub like the digitone.
I’m having a hard time finding any difference in behaviour when the option is checked/unchecked. the manual is of no help here either. if you hear back from support pls let us know!
