The perceived difference is an abrupt change in volume when using a linear env. Especially when fading out (decay/release). Exponential curves sound smooth to human ears. Human hearing “resolution” is more leaning towards the transition from something to nothing than loud to 75% of loud. Linear envs sound like something is abruptly cut off.
