I’m curious to see what synths your sequencing using the Digitakt/Digitone/Keys
Digitakt - 8 midi tracks
Digitone - 4 midi tracks
I currently own both the Digitakt and Digitone Keys and I’m now at the point of choosing what to sequence with them.
So… I’m thinking that if I have these synths/drums connected to
DIGITAKT
Midi 1 - Jomox MBase 11
Midi 2 - Jomox MBranev1_1
Midi 3 - Novation Drum Station R
Midi 4 - Novation Bass Station R
Midi 5 - DSI Mopho Desktop
Midi 6 - Mam MB33
Midi 7 - Behringer TD-3
Midi 8 - Arturia Drumbrute (Midi Out B Trigger Only)
Regarding the above synths/drums connected to the Digitakt, I have a Kenton Thru 12 so would this be ok to connect Midi Out A to the Kenton Thru 12 In without any glitches, timing problems instead of daisy chaining in/thru/in/thru etc etc etc?
DIGITONE KEYS
Midi 1 - Modal Argon 8M
Midi 2 - Modal Cobalt 8M
Digitone/Keys I understand has 4 midi tracks which will give me 8 note poly per midi track so makes sense to connect the Modal synths here?
PS
I realise that there’s a lot I intend to connect to Digitakt however it will also be handy for sound design as well as the odd jam if needed.
I also have a Faderfox PC4 coming tomorrow and somehow I’d like it to be connected to the DIGITAKT in some way so that I can control the midi cc’s of the synths/drums connected to the midi tracks 1-8
So are you guys sequencing your hardware via DT/DN/DK?
I also have the ARTURIA Keystep Pro but next year I want to build I small jamming setup with that. I may use my MPCX to sample all the gear connected to DT/DK but for now I’m focused on the ELEKTRON sequencing.
Peter my idea is to make use of all the Digitakt midi tracks for drum modules and mono synths and keep the Digitone Keys for my synths with more polyphony such as the 2 Modal desktops.
I could then prepare samples by feeding the outputs from the audio interface in to the MPCX later to edit and prepare my samples/loops etc to perform on the AKAI instead of humping gear around.
Mostly tho all the stuff I have connected will be for sound design/sampling with the added bonus of being able to jam with it…
I’ve got a Blofeld and a Typhon running along with my DT/DN and it’s a dream. I have a couple of midi bugs to iron out but I’m sure that’s user error more than anything else.
I agree that the UI on the Blofeld is a bore but it’s worth it when you plumb them depths.
Using program change on the DT for patch switching on each synth has made it more fun too. Multi mode on the Blofeld is incredible. I put it through it’s paces the other day by having 4 tracks each playing a different patch on every step for 32 steps and it was fine. The screen was going bonkers but it didn’t glitch out in the sound. It’s something I’m going to try and work with to get some really interesting stuff going on.
Typhon is astounding. Sounds so good.
For the moment I really feel like I don’t need anything else.
I have a Digitone with Nord Drum 2 (6 drums) and Micromonsta 2 (bitimbral) attached.
Keeping to the restriction of 2 Audio In channels on the Digitone.
I rarely use all at the same time but this setup allows me to jam with or without the computer.
If something is happening, I then switch the computer on and can multitrack directly from my Midas Venice 160 (groups 1, 2, 3, 4 and main out) into my MOTU UltraLite Mk3
Your post reminded me to ask:
Anyone have guidance on picking MIDI channels?
I want them to be consistent so projects keep working, and also not close doors for future hardware.
I was thinking of avoiding 1 and 16 which iirc some hardcoded synths use. Anything else?
Yep I see your point.
I have templates in Reaper for every and any soft/hard synth.
You make a good point. For instance Doctor A is fixed on midi ch16. And it is not such an old piece of gear
I am also using midi channels 1 to 8 for whatever. The way I have my setup allows for that as it won’t interfere with audio channels 1-8 on the DT. DT being placed before in the chain
I’ve been using the DN to sequence all my hardware synths, it’s just depended what I’m using at the time. Although I wouldn’t recommend it I did have 4 B clones (Cat, Model D, Wasp & K2) running on the 4 midi channels just by daisy chaining. No issues to report. Deffo better to use a thru unit of some kind tho. When the need arises i use an old pre USB MOTU MTP AV and it’s ace. 8x8 midi patch bay with front panel controls so I can route what I want where I want from 8 sources to 8 destinations or use it as a simple 8 way thru box. Deffo handy if you’re using multiple midi sources or any synth with a fixed midi channel for instance.
Hey Bunker yeah I’ll use a Kenton Thru 12 however I wanted the Digitakt triggering the Digitone keys BUT I have the Faderfox PC4 controller connected to the Dt midi IN so I think I’ll need some other kind of merge box in order to have DT linked to both Faderfox and DK? Something with x2 Midi IN
Hey Rob. Yeah that’s why I thought about the MTP. 8 ins that you can filter and route to any 8 outs. The AV I use is pre usb bersion but they also do a usb version. Prob got something similar and better on the market now but I’ve had mine donkeys years and I didn’t pay much for it second hand. You can set it all up from the front panel. Great addition to an OTB rig.
I have now ordered the Faderfox EC4 and UC4 to team up with the PC4 that was delivered from Rubadub yesterday so…
I’m thinking these 3 controllers can be used as controls and mixer for all my hardware. So whatever is connected to the Digitakt and Digitone keys.
I’ll figure it all out once I start setting it up when the final pieces arrive. As long as the DT and DK are triggering in sync I’m happy it’s just I need some kind of box/merger to add the midi controllers… I could do this easily with the MPCX as it has plenty midi ins/outs but I just wanna use my Elektron gear with external synths for now mate.
Bunker Iv’e always had MPC’s so no problem mate. The MPCX tho has 2 midi ins and 4 midi outs and CV plus there’s 2 x USB connections for say an Overhub where you can then connect your USB midi synths so yeah the AKAI can be the centre of your gear indeed.
However I’m just gonna use my Elektron gear with hardware synths for now.
I spent the day re routing midi got the Novation sl mk3 keyboard and toraiz squid, merged together then it goes into a thru box going to all my gear… so can feed the Elektron gear midi notes either played in via keyboard or Euclidean sequences from the squid…
Just need another merge so can sequence my peak from the digitone as well…
it will be its main sequencer 8 notes of digitone midi for 8 voice synth
The more stuff I need to connect the more I’m confused haha.
So…
I have a Kenton Thru 12 which I’ll use the midi OUT of the Digitakt to the midi IN of the Thru 12
I’ll then connect various synth modules to the midi THRU’s of the Kenton
I’ll want the other midi OUT of the Digitakt to the midi IN of the Digitone Keys as I want the Modal Argon 8M and Modal Cobalt 8M connected via midi
But as I already have the Kenton Thru 12 connected to the Digitakt would I need another Thru box for Digitone Keys? Also I need to somehow have the Faderfox EC4-PC4-UC4 connected tp control synths connected to both Digitakt and Digitone Keys.
Would this be where a merge box comes in… Confused
