Yesterday I loaded a project to my DT2. And I thought… wow… I don’t remember this being as wet as it was before.
I lost my rag a bit.
I travelled 2 hours across my city to buy a DT1. Because I just had to know.
I’ve loaded the same project on both units. Made sure they’re exactly the same file backup I made last year from my old DT1. Same samples. No tweaks, nothing.
They should be exactly the same, and they aren’t.
It seems to be with the reverb decay and mix perhaps. I don’t know. Can’t really be bothered to diagnose it any further. I’m just gonna keep both units.
That first kick drum, so much more saturated and soft-clipped than the DT2.
I don’t mind that necessarily. I don’t mind if gear changes through upgrades, I just wish this stuff were noted a lot more and that Elektron were more transparent.
I think the only difference is internal headroom. I bet if you increase the track volumes in the mixer you will get the same sound as the OG. It may be hitting the compressor differently too.
I think the reverb sounds markedly different at the same settings. But headroom might also be a difference. Not too sure.
I gave my wife a blind a/b test, and she said DT1 sounded better with this project. So for now, I will just use DT1 for these songs and these live performances, and DT2 for future stuff.
Im assuming this is just recorded output of the same sound, loaded on both machines. I’d love to hear (and see) a comparison between the two inputs, the converters. Im about to pick up a DTII but I have considered keeping my DTI… specifically because of living through this exact scenario before, with the MPCs. An objectively “better” unit comes out, but sometimes there are still characterstics of the older units that are useful and unique.
