I’m a DJ but in want To be more creative and make my own Sound. So it’s important for me,If i play live ,that i have time to perform (cut the kick Off, Control some synth parameters on the fly, do some FX actions). My Sound would be dark progressive/Industrial with dark/hard basslines, drones (with FX), percussive, maybe later with a TD-3 in additional.
Which Elektron Device ist the best choice for my claim or max. 2 devices? In wan’t To keep the Setup reduced, i don’t need 1000 Options for “If i will one day…”. Less Options but therefore i know what i have/do.
Pretty much all of them will support your performance goals to some degree.
The Model range is simpler: fewer features, but the features they have are well chosen to make them great instruments.
The Digi- series (and the Syntakt) are the “mid range” ones. In particular the mark II ones are very well featured all-round good.
The Analog Rytm, Analog Four and the Octatrack have the broadest range of performance controls. They’re more complex intruments and typically take more time to master and prepare. In particular, the Octatrack is a unique machine which does things no other can but most people find takes longer to learn.
The main decision to make is: do you want to make your material using samples, shnth sounds, or both?
Model:Samples, Digitakt, Tonverk, Octatrack focus on samples.
Model:Cycles, Digitone, Syntakt, Analog Four focus on synth sounds.
The Analog Rytm has both synth engines and a sampler section.
If you’re a complete beginner, get a Digitakt OG (DT 1). It’s the most straightforward Elektron gear, really fast to learn, and you can get it pretty cheap nowadays.
As much as I love DNII (Digitone II), you can’t beat the DT when it comes to learning the Elektron way.
Can’t become a musician overnight. I’d suggest you get a little screentime in front of some apps with a basic midi keyboard controller before you decide to invest hundreds of dollars into the idea.
Might also give you a better idea of what type of interface you’re interested in working with.
And yes, gatekeepers, you can become a musician overnight just like I did.
I bought a bunch a gear ‘cause I wanted to be a rock star and I did and I was that very evening as I turned on my OG DT and said ‘what the f___!’
He will be a bad musician day one just like me. Except he’s been matching keys and tempos and already now’s FX and the flow of songs so after 90 days he will jamming his first album at a show and I’ll still be saving 8 bar loops.
Go for it my guy (OP) just don’t lose the mortgage because of crack addiction (music gear).
OG digitakt and Korg Minilogue XD and have them sync via midi clock or ableton link. The step sequencers on both units are very nice and both are fairly easy to learn and operate. I began this journey of yours 10 years ago. I would DJ and have the others hooked up. I would acapella make my own remixes live. Lots of choices but if you want to stick with 2 that would be my 2. Alternatively if you want all live less menu I would replace my OG Digitakt suggestion to a TR-8 drum machine (OG) not the “S” because original TR was meant to play live and fairly easy to use!
DNII and DTII will be the best combo for many people I reckon. TV needs several months to be usable and even then it’s more studio focused than, say, the OT.
