while using the midi part of the octatrack, i found that i really want to have some parts of the automation detached from the actual note-track. following that idea, i used
[ul]
[li]midi track 1-4 to host the midi-notes using midi-channel 1-4[/li]
[li]midi track 5-8 to host automation data using midi-channel 1-4 as well[/li]
[/ul]
the goal would be to have some melody playing on track 1 while putting all automation data on track 5. that way i could temporarily mute the automation track and make parameter changes myself, live.
BUT:
[ul]
[li]midi track 5-8 won´t forward any automations, [/li]
[/ul]
–>so if i tweak control cc1 (assigned to a certain cc, eg. cutoff on external synth) on midi track 5, i can hear the cutoff opening/closing on the external synth. fine!
but when i record these tweaks as automation on midi track 5, they wont be sent to the synth.
has someone tried something like that as well? can someone try to reproduce that behaviour? because that makes no sense to me. why would it be that you can´t detach the automation from the notes?
A suggestion would be to record triggers on the automation tracks, while setting their velocity to 0 so no trigger is actually fired. I have not tested this though…
okay. i tried every trigger option available - it wont pass the locks from track 5.
it even will not transmit locks on actual note triggers…
now - why is that? i think i need to contact elektron support for clearification.
or did anyone of you tried it and found a solution?
and for that matter, how do you guys handle automation/live tweaking when it comes to already recorded automation on a track? dont you want to have the possibility to live tweak a parameter even when this parameter is already automated?
have you tried turning the assigned cc knob on the new track, sometimes you have to do that for it to “catch”. if it’s assigned on another track.
also, if i remember right, the muted cc knob value latches and ignores mutes (sometimes?), so sometimes you have to clear it or at least put it in the middle.
have you tried sending to different devices to make sure it’s not on receiving end? for whatever reason i have had some stuff not respond to ccs without being sent with a note message, even though it works fine with other stuff.
i usually use a copy of a track whole and mute the old one.
there is a lot of weird behavior possible though, i’ve had to start new projects or power cycle the octa more than a few times.
problem solved (okay - not solved but identified).
i had the cc assignment doubled.
[ul]
[li]track 1 cutoff (cc XX) was assigned [/li]
[li]track 5 cutoff (cc XX) was assigned as well…[/li]
[/ul]
as soon as i detached the assignment of that parameter within track 1 the modulation through track 5 worked. it seems that one can assign a cc only 1 time within 1 track. all other assignments will not work and changes of those are discarded!
i hope this sheds some light to everyone having this situation in the future (when finding this thread, of course)
so - thank you all for your contribution. maybe you have gained from this as well
cheers
…and if there is anything else like this workflow up your sleeve, please post!

Sorry I didn’t get here before. The OT manual actually states that if two MIDI tracks are set to the same channel number then the lower number track overrides the higher number track. Glad that you sorted it out anyway.
