The top three thumbnails make me feel disgusted. They are disrespecting the culture and legacy imo.
The bottom thumbnails makes me want to listen to the tracks in a nice sound system with some friends

Same thing happened with progressive House.
It is one thing when a genre evolves, another when a subgenre gets cannibalized like with deep House and progressive House.
Another one was Riddm. Riddm is the instrumental part of a few Caribbean music genres, like Reggae.
Some young kids recently were showing me “Riddm” and it sounded like American-style “EDM” and I don’t even see the resemblance with actual Riddm.
Ask three people what Hardcore is and you’ll get at least four different answers.
Or R&B.
I don’t believe in sun/sub genres. In fact I don’t believe is sub genres. I keep it simple
etc…etc…
some stuff gets stuffed into slots that make no sense. so simplification, in my opinion, makes organization easier. makes me miss the days of going into the record store and seeing just those categories. the good ol’ days. less is more.
Categorization is how our brains work… no way around it… (but I also agree that too narrow categories are not helping much)
I make it even easier than that:
Music I like and listen too.
Shit music that I ignore.
I like it. I used to use that. But my folder with shit music I don’t like was empty. I don’t keep music I don’t like
But I agree with those two genres.
Yeah, having genres does help us speak to each other about music, but sometimes it just goes overboard with all the subgenres and microgenres. I do think it’s useful to have the language to describe music.
One thing that drives me crazy about genres is when people think “techno” is an umbrella term for all electronic music. I live in the US and people do that all the time here.
I remember once at a festival (in the US) I was in line to get in with some friends and we were chatting with the security guys:
He asked who we were there to see and I said “we don’t really know what the lineup is tonight, so we’ll probably just be at the techno stage” – he said “well it’s all techno!” – and no, it wasn’t. There was dnb, dubstep, house, etc. and a dedicated stage for techno. But apparently some people think it means anything electronic
It really threw me for ages seeing “electro” as the shorthand here in France; I was hoping for more boom-tschak than there actually was…
Yeah Deep House now is totally different than what I expect to hear. Same with Tech House, which used to be music like Mista G. Now it’s bro style EDM.
Lo Fi House now gets filed under Deep House many times. That may be a good place to start. As for what deep house is - it’s typically got some melancholy elements to it or just has a focus on sophisticated harmonies. Example - Min9th chords instead of triads. The bass sounds are lower (deeper) and more rolled off. Stuff like that.
Music that is played with a deep mind playing a deepmind.
I knew someone would get it eventually.
No it wasnt
And dont get me started on solder. (If you can say folder, how hard is it to change just one consonant?)
Garage house I meant, from Paradise Garage
Garage rock - just missing the b before the second a
Sample fodder in a folder.
Thank you for all of your replies and the video links! Very informative, and the conversation did help de-mystify a good part of the term for me.
All term overloading and complexity of human categorization aside, the essence appears to be around darker, moody, emotive sounds realized by certain chords and chord progressions (e.g. min9ths etc.) in combination with thumbing bass structures and rolled off highs.
‘Deep house’ is probably the most prominent context that the term is being used in, but what about ‘dub techno’? With ‘Dub techno’ in mind, do you see anything worth adding, or is that considered deep by definition?
Sounds suspiciously close to gay-raj, which must be pretty hard-core/extreme, since regular raj is already pretty fabulous…
Lol or ‘dirty’
7th chords, pretty aggressive filtering, and lots of delay and reverb…
