Hey everyone, just had a thought I wanted to throw out there. Why do so many of the machines on the ST and AR have a decay function right on the main machine page? Feels a bit redundant to me, considering we’ve got a full ADSR section where you can tweak decay to your liking. Seems like that space could be better used for some other interesting sound design feature. Does anyone have any insight into what Elektron’s reasoning might be here? Appreciate any thoughts, thanks!
It’s just a convenient place to have decay right with other synth parameters.
I agree, it is redundant and sometimes even an extra step if you want to use full ADSR.
But for quick programming it’s quite handy.
Alsp some machines have almost infinite decay preset on the ADSR, with the extra decay you don’t need to worry about that and can stay on one page for programming.
on rytm you can layer long sample on top of short synth part, so having two decays makes sense, also I’m not sure how amp envelopes work on syntakt but on rytm the amp decay affects the next trig attack, if you have envelope overlap then the attack of the next trig is “disregarded” and the envelope starts at the point of the decay, you can do a lot of different things with how it works in terms of how sound being trigged, also, the decays work a bit different in terms of how the sound decays, the amp is more linear the SRC a bit different for every machine, if you use a wave scope you can compare between them, it’s subtle but there is difference
another use is cleanup of long sounds, you can control the voice decay with the SRC decay and use the amp decay to cut the sound
Having a separate decay for the oscillator section can be used to create a transient, with the filter set to self-oscillate for the body of the sound, controlled by the filter/amp envelopes. This can be really useful for designing kicks and certain types of bass sounds.
to a decent degree you can, combined with the saw/ramp/exp and the envelopes you can, if you really go deep you can also use a portion of the sine wave form to have smooth decay and cut the sound before it goes back up…
also on rytm you can use PARAMETER SLIDES to create timed envelopes easily
