He streams his life on Twitch - this is what my first comment mentioned - that he made the mistake of very publically exposing his personality. He’s in a bubble and spends a lot of time with people that stroke his ego. Never meet your heroes.
God I assume so. I also mentioned that I try to learn from his mistakes, operative word being ‘try’
This genuinly annoys me - and the thread was locked earlier today because of someone making the exact same claim - so I’m going to write it in capitals:
STOP ATTRIBUTING MOTIVATION TO OTHER PEOPLES OPINIONS
That you think it reads like jealousy quite frankly says more about you than the people you’re attempting to dismiss.
Just wanted to drop in and say that I always had assumed I’d have no interest in deadmaus because of the visual aesthetic of his performance identity and the fact that I associate him with big EDM festival schlock but had literally never (knowingly) listened to any of his music before this thread – and I was pleasantly surprised. I probably will not become a mega-fan but I liked what I heard and as noted in the thread-title I found the mixing detailed, creative, and very fun to listen to.
So, thank you, OP for bringing the music to my attention!
Oh my. Well since you’ve gone all out with bold stuff, caps, and a self quote I would like you to know that I stand before you suitably chastened! Deadmau5 SUX
I don’t mind hearing people say my favorite artists suck but maybe I’m just so use to people down at the local budweiser and wings joint telling me how much they hate Eno when I put discret music on the ol’ jukebox. For the first few months I was rather surprised they could even hear the subtle changes to the compositions.
Honestly I loved Ghosts n Stuff when it was released, absolute banger. I have a feeling it was around the time I was starting to get into electronic music properly as well (I had some Ministry of Sound albums as a kid but I also had a Spice Girls album so I don’t know if that counts for much).
I wonder how many people would click thread title “Deadmaus is a mixing and mastering god” and not expect to pull out the popcorn and have a bit of a laugh.
End of the day no one is going to claim he is bad at mixing and mastering even if it isn’t to there taste. I would be curious if you let’s say put one of his tracks in with an AFX album and told a mastering engineer to do his best to make it cohesive with the rest of the music what the results would be and if I would personally like it more.
Ok, I’m gonna try. (partly this is how I feel, partly this is me trying out being critical in the vein of the OP’s original message - but in friendly opposition).
I’m not sure I like the very liberal use of very sparkly high frequency range. He uses this range a lot, to the point (it seems to me) of intentionally reducing other ranges presence/energy, in both the composition and mix, so he can use this upper range more.
I want to argue it’s not “good”. I think it’s too much: distracting, aggressive, overwhelming. I quite like being overwhelmed by music sometimes; and also some aggressive music. I also like a lot of 60s and 70s recordings. In that era, they often deliberately pull back on that range across multiple tracks so that one particular instrument can use it to its/their best advantage. Deadmau5 goes the other way and seems to push as many instruments as possible up into that range. I find it tiring and, although it imparts “the deadmau5 sound” I was alluding to upthread… I don’t like it. I want to say something like “It’s not very characterful”… but maybe I’m just overusing that word now.
(and hey… I freely admit I’m not great at mixing, or composition. Just an enthusiastic musical dilettante learning to use their ears and dipping into what I’ve felt and read)
