But yeah, I have lots of friends who only listen to the most monotonic techno in every situation, at home cooking dinner, in the car driving to the summer house etc. I’m just not one of them. After quitting my dj career five years ago I’ve been less and less interested in repetitive dance music, but that’s just me. I don’t mean to offend anybody who listens to techno/house/edm at home.
Yeah I really like his music and have enjoyed the book too. Very simple insights that make me go ”woooo, I’ve never thought about it quite like that.” He’s an intelligent dude. I appreciate most of his work.
But in the interest of this thread I really wonder what does David Byrne think of Deadmau Five?
I’ve always had the greatest respect for deadmau5. However, any video I’ve seen of him in his studio, is like “Really? All that gear? What do you do with it?”
It all sounds like it could come from (insert your daw here). That is in no way a bad thing, but I just wonder why he needs all those massive walls of modular when the output doesn’t seem to need it.
He does seem like a very hands on kind of person, tho, so perhaps it’s how his brain is wired. He needs the knobs and switches to get to where he’s going, even if the sound itself doesn’t need all those kits.
I don’t get it, honestly. It’s too fidgety to be hypnotic, and not doing anything melodically or harmonically interesting, and the textures are super predictable. The production values are fine, I guess? Very clean. But there’s a lot of stuff in the realm of minimal techno that strikes me as being more sonically amazing with depth, texture etc.
I can’t stand his stuff, no doubt he has a talent for what he does but this kind of “EDM” has no authenticity or mojo, it sounds like AI generated music. Take all the things which make a track, throw them together to get maximum financial return.
The EDM world reminds me of Epic Trance - trying way too hard.
That said it is quite savvy to be able to commercialise what was underground music and make it palatable to mainstream (mostly American) audiences. Like a fast food chain.
His music is analogous to his studio, total overkill. Even though it does sound 100% DAW made. The whole ethos reminds me of modern hollywood action movies, more everything, too loud, too “impressive” too much use of computers, lacking substance, etc.
I’d love to hear what he could do using just a groovebox though, without all his software.
…ur talking about one of the big names in electronic dance music here…
and therefor, all rules for big names apply here, too…
u never get big without lovers…and where are lovers, there are haters…
u might never get a second chance for a first impression, but u also should never believe everything u think right away…u’d be well adviced to always give second thoughts a chance, just to stay fair, just to make sure, ur mind is not fooled by all kinds of nothing but hearsay in the information jungle…
wondering why o why, somebody has sooo much gear, is he/she even using any of this for real, is a classic…if ur a big name, making big bux in the biz, u can buy all the gear u want or spent that money for further more taxes…
switching perspectives is essential…so always ask urself, what would u do…
oh, and by the way…since we all need, no matter what ur artistic intensions migh be, some kind of marketing concept and way of presenting and outsideperception, picking one of the most iconic brands and hijack it into the future to make it ur own to be able to not show off ur face that much, is a great idea…
