D&B BATTLE 3: Can I Get an Amen? (Not that One!)

WELCOME ALL TO

DRUM & BASS/JUNGLE BATTLE 3
CAN I GET AN AMEN? (not that one!)

Gospel’s sweet sounds have made their way from the American South through Folk, Blues, Soul, Rock n Roll, Reggae, House, Hip Hop, and into today’s music. From Mahalia Jackson to Elvis Presley, The Silver Quintet to the Sensational Goldenairs, The Lumzy Sisters to Sister Sledge to MC Hammer, Gospel Music and its practitioners have had a massive influence—not just on American popular music, but on international theater, film, dance, literature, visual arts, and even the way most of us now speak English. It’s in the air all around us.

So this month, we’re putting some spirit in our hearts by pulling from the roots of rhythm & melody that underscore so much of our shared musical universe.

5 SIMPLE RULES:

  1. Post a gospel (or heavily gospel-inspired) track or 2 in the thread for others to use or be inspired by
  2. Create and Drum & Bass or Jungle track using your own or someone else’s samples posted in the thread
  3. YOU MAY NOT USE THE AMEN BREAK
or its derivations (“tramen,” “firefight,” “sniper,” etc.)
  4. Keep it under 6 minutes!
  5. Send your submission as WAV, AIFF, or FLAC file to your friendly neighborhood @KingDuppy by
MIDNITE May 26th (Sunday night/Monday morning)

HAVE FUN!!!

Great theme! I have a bad track record lately of missing Elektronauts battles, so I make no promises

Howard Gospel Choir’s rendition of “Be Not Dismayed”

And for one of those gospel-inspired theater pieces, “How Shall I See You Through My Tears” from The Gospel at Colonus

I might give this one a go if I have some extra time.

Here are a couple of tracks

And does this count?

Also, question about the rules. Samples only or can we use synths and drum machines in our tracks as well?

I’m up for this one, not too familiar with the theme though.

Here’s a classic Shy FX track showcasing the theme…

Do we just pick a posted track and sample that? Edit: I went through the thread backwards so read the rules last :slightly_smiling_face:

This is quite a challenge which I try to embrace. Really out of my comfort zone.

After skipping through some spotify playlists, I found two tracks which inspired me and which seemed sample-ready. I haven’t found any real breaks so far. :upside_down_face:

And the other is from Johnny Cash.

For those who might be less familiar with the genre, I have a few suggestions.

First, I’d suggest Sinner’s Crossroads, which streams every Thursday but is also available any old time you want to listen here.

(shocking, I know, King Duppy suggesting people go listen to WFMU.)

I’d also suggest looking up the roots and lesser-known albums of your favorite R&B, soul, blues, or folk singers, since so many of them came from the gospel tradition and often released records just for that market. Johnny Cash above is a great example.

Not to mention Whitney Houston, Aretha, Little Richard (pictured at the start of the thread), Sam Cooke, Mariah of course, the list goes on…

In the meantime, here’s a favorite song of mine that is not gospel but clearly takes from the gospel tradition.

Yeah i wanna do this one, but do struggle with finding a proper song i wanna play with. Beside Elvis and Johnny Cash was kinda bummed where to find something.
I know many used gospel as base, but it’s not easy to choose something and fit the topic
