Iāve been playing around with overdrive and distortion on 909 sounds, trying to figure out what I like.
Hereās my TR-8 going through a Mackie 1202 and then into a Boss SE-70, which has a handful of (very noisy!) analog OD/DS āpedalsā built-in. Dry/Wet examples:

If I could tame the kick for fuzz, itās definitely the most fun, in my opinion. Does anyone have any tips/suggestions on that?

Both Overdrives remove high end, āMetalā especially (and thus makes it dull and sucks out the energy), while Fuzz faires better and sounds nice.
But even with the Fuzz version, Iād still EQ some of the high end back in ![]()
The first fuzz version has an interesting phasing effect going on, I wonder if itās because itās mixing dry an wet, and the second version is 100% wet.

I prefer the darker tone as well. I removed a lot of the high band from all of them (which I think is 12k+ on the SE-70 EQ, but I havenāt found it referenced). Iāll play around with removing more.
For all of them, it used the SE-70 algorithm of a dry/wet chain. I mixed it at around a 20/80 dry/wet split. The second fuzz was definitely the most aggressive and I found I could push both the dry and wet harder to meet the volume of the total dry signal.
I also experimented with putting a 100% dry kick on top, which kind of worked, but it didnāt have the same tone as everything else so it stuck out in an unpleasing way.
Iāll play around with 100% wet and see if I can tame the kick a little. Iām not a fan of that massively distorted kick sound and would prefer something of a more controlled deep hit. Just havenāt found the right EQ yet⦠ends up removing all of the kick energy, I find.

High-End is what gives music the lustre. If you remove high-end, you remove the lustre, and with it the energy, and it becomes unpleasant for the ears.
(Apart from that, some things to try: Use a ton of distortion and slowly bring that in, might be just 3%! The most interesting part of overdriving drums is how the low frequencies work against the high frequencies, especially the kick against the cymbals.)

One last post on this so I donāt keep spamming the topic here.
I hear the phasing you were talking about. Itās strange because both wet and dry were within the SE-70, it wasnāt phasing caused by aux latency. Aux latency was much more noticeable, though.
So instead of wet/dry, I went 100% wet, and tried to be very conservative with the settings and I was able to dial in a more controlled fuzz. The wall of noise is certainly fun, but something a bit more controlled is more realistic.

Yeah,
Run the kick on a seperate channel in your mixer. Rest of the kit on another channel.
Have the fx as send.
Dial in the send level on the kick to taste, eq stuff back that gets lost through distortion.
Do the same with the rest of the kit on the other channel, smash the high EQ as that gets eaten by distortion too (as pointed out by @Jeanne )
