Cue/Main level discrepancy in studio mode [resolved]

Can anyone suggest why my cue output levels are far below my mains in studio mode? With equal input gain they come in to my interface about -20dB on the mains. Both are set to +63 in the mixer.

I can compensate of course but would like to know if this is normal operation or not ideally.

Check cue volumes of all tracks and see if they are the same as your main volume values. If your using a master track it only affects mains and not cue, so if it’s boosting volume you’d want to drop master track level somewhere (mixer/track/fx) to match…

Your sure the interface inputs are set on the same reference level, +4dBu vs -10dBV? Or it seems your using mic or instrument inputs as you mention input gain?

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the reply. Yes the levels are set the same as the masters, that’s how I noticed the problem. I’m not using a master track, and it is at the the output level of the Octatrack not the inputs of the interface as there are no problems with outputs from other sources.

What about the mixer page, there is a Cue-Master cross fade using the main level encoder iirc.

Right now I’m out of ideas but I’ll let you know it’s not normal, the outputs are rated the same at least for MKI, MKII cue output rating is missing from the manual but I assume it’s the same as mains as well. In use on my OTMKI they are the same volume…

For sanity I’d swap the cables and check that situation doesn’t reverse…

@Spheric_El, good call, but that only effects the headphones…

Mixer page Main Level and Main Cue Level difference?

Studio mode don’t change levels, only mutes mode and display, AFAIK.

Thanks Mike, yes I’m talking about input levels at my interface. I will check everything again this evening, I agree that it must be something I’m overlooking.

Ah I see.

Ok, having checked this properly now, I can report that it was indeed my interface, not the Octatrack. I was using the first pair of ins for my main out and the second pair for cue. The first pair are of the dual mic/jack type, and even though they are marked mic/line, it seems there’s mic-pre gain even with jacks connected.
So my cock-up - as usual I was trying something out last thing at night when I’m too tired to think straight…
Thank you everyone for the help and advice.
