Fairly new Octatrack user, but I’ve been trying to recreate nice long reverbs similar to that warp-y Quadraverb sound. My results so far have been too muddy for my tastes. Any tips would be appreciated. Ironically I have a Quadraverb, and have been using it as a send effect with the Octa, but would love to free up some inputs for other gear. Here’s an example of the sound I’m referring to —
Muddy, maybe too much bass?
I prefer Dark Reverb.
I would increase HP filter first.
Thanks man. Definitely tried the HP to varying degrees of success. Maybe its the character of the Dark Reverb that I’m hearing.
oh god this SH101.
i know right ?
Sounds so gorgeous even without the reverb.
I owned the SH01A and everyone is saying it comes really close. But I never had this aha moment I have when listening to some SH101 demos. Maybe I’m just fooled
Nah I’m with you, the boutique is missing that really juicy low end which is kinda the whole point of a 101 in the first place.
Try the dark reverb. Decay up to about 125 (127 will be infinite decay) then filter out the lows to taste.
Bring the dry/wet up to taste.
Then dampen the highs of the verb with the shelving if required.
Next step… Modulate the decay time with a shallow but fast lfo, also modulate the pre filter, or the shelf? Be subtle. You can get sort of close to quadraverbish… But like the SH01a… Its not the real thing
I have an SH101, even with a crappy boss reverb pedal on it, sounds utterly amazing!
aphex/u-ziq/black dog/b12 / autechre etc used a lot of standard gear in the 90’s , some of his tracks sound terrible (quality wise) , but i still like some of them.
i doubt if he recorded some of this old tunes the same way , but using a sh01a , theyd sound any different or anyone would be able to tell unless he did an fm mod or something with them.
as for doing it on octatrack , i’m not sure , i’d probably try to also reduce sample rate at some point.
if i have to choose between using what ive got which was affordable (sh01a) and still getting nice results , not using anything or paying over the odds for a 101 (£700 + )… i know what i’m using tonight…
its almost at a point you can (if you are very lucky) get 2 x analog 4’s for the price of a good condition sh101 .
Oh yeah those Alesis algos are great for that sound. I love them to pieces.
I’ll take a stab at this but I don’t think the OT will do a very good job of replicating the density of this reverb.
I’m a dark reverb peoples too.
Extend the time in dark reverb and turn the LP up and play with the HP too and the dry / wet.
Nice — modulating the decay … hadn’t thought of that!
I have the 01A and the TB-03. Never played with a real 101, but I’m having a lot of fun with it. Sounds great with the Quadraverb!
