Cracking snare design battle

I was going to ask people what their tricks are for getting good snare sounds out of the Rytm, but then I thought “let’s make this a battle.”

Anyone down?

I know that not everyone’s definition of “good” snare sound is the same, and many might disagree with the “good = cracking or snappy” qualifier, but in my use of the Rytm it’s the weakling snare sound the included machines provide that always bums me out the most.

I’m thinking:
-By a deadline, people post audio samples and sysex of their 5 best snare creations.
-Only the internal machines and effects are allowed. Compressor and overdrive allowed, audio examples can have other drums and even samples on other tracks to show the snares in context, but the focus should be on getting a snappy, cracking, or otherwise tuff snare sound. Machines other than the snare machines can be used as long as they are internal to the Rytm and don’t use samples.
-We do a little soundcloud page with the entries, people vote

Eh? Eh?

I’m super curious to hear/see what others are capable of. My RYTM snares using only the synth engines aren’t that great.

I find that I always want to make the noise portion of the snare punchier, so I have to use my LFO to modulate the noise volume. But I need the LFO modulating the amp of the entire snare sound because I can’t get the envelope snappy enough.

It’s so frustrating because it’s just so close to being right.

Snap = LFO to volume like you said

If you really want the noise, just use some transient samples / make some

I actually opened a support ticket today to ask if they ever have plans to make the amp envelope re-triggered by the pad. The filter envelope is, as is the LFO, so I have no idea why the amp envelope isn’t.

That being said, I would like to see this battle! I’m sure people have come up with something interesting.

If there’s enough interest I’d spring for something small as a winner’s prize, like, a $10 Amazon gift card for the winner haha

The apparent lack of interest in this thread makes me feel better about my inability to construct nice snares using only the internal synth engines. To get that snap, you have to choose which parameter gets it using your solitary LFO as a one-shot. That’s about it; the envelopes won’t really help much, other than make the snare sound shorter, and change the contour of the filter a bit. I’ll usually blast the overdrive to make it a bit punchier, but I still can’t quite get the snap.

Getting snappy snares on the Tempest (using noise on the digital oscillators in conjunction with the analog oscillators) was much easier for me. It was a real pleasure to be able to use 5 different envelopes (which were all useful with a nice snappy sounding AD mode) and 2 LFOs per sound. You could also route the digital oscillators pre & post the filter.

I recall the Tanzbar snare being more useful as well. I’m guessing the envelopes are analog because you could get a nice snappy/punchy sound using only the decay parameters.

would love to hear what people come up with, weakest element of the rytm imo.

I agree. Without samples, the Synth side of this Drum Synthesizer is weak, plain and simple, especially for snares, crashes and hats.

I will concede that making a fat bass/tom sound is not bad at all. Not perfect, but what is.

Hopefully Elektron stops jerking around and puts some attention to this.

I dont think its hard to get good sounding snares out of my rytm. But maybe i am not that picky or experienced when it comes to sounddesign. @prints please post some examples of snares that you like…
Maybe we can try to replicate them.

hey guys,

listen to:

that’s my RYTM’s snare all over. A really good example is the Song 'cause.

It’s Punchy and Crackling and vice versa.

I usually end up using a sample of an 808 snare. I like the 808 snare and the 606 snare a lot. It would be nice if the sample could bypass the filter and amp; I think that would really help when it comes to blending in the analog engine in a useful manner.

I miss getting that snare using pure analog synthesis so I ordered a Tanzmaus and am about to buy a TR-606 (also for those great hi-hats).

I’ll keep the RYTM around because it’s really good for a more polished sound.

Got crazy on BD1+SD2 in this track :

I would not say this was the best snare I ever got, though.

layer snare machines. some comp and distortion. will crackle your bones. maybe?

'cause is a really nice track! And it’s a great snare sound for sure. Is that purely synthesis or do you have a sample layered in with it?

I uploaded a Kit with 3 Snare Sounds on pads 2 to 4. One for each snare machine. I tried to make them as punchy as possible. Theres a bit of comp and dist added on top of it.
Please tell me what you think about them…

What you think of the AR808 soundset? IMO the 808 sd in it is rather good and is often my goto starting point for these types of sounds.

I personally love that pack, its been the starting point of all my kits since i got it and the snare is really nice

Really nice track and snares!
