COSMOS by Soma

I use mine as a send on the ssl6 so I can get guitar or bass loops going easy. The infinity is on the other send so I can stack loops unsynchronised. Quite enjoy the setup though wonder if I should use an OT on these send.
What I like about the cosmos is keeping the feedback just below 1 and using sup to refresh the loops. I haven’t tried it on my drum machines setup yet.

How do you like the SSL? I’ve been tempted by the Big Six but…it’s really big

They are great mixers IMO. I have two sixes from when I had money to spend on studio. The other is for OT, turntables and drum machines. I always find I am one connection short of a perfect setup with the six, but if there was one more I’d still be one short. Such is the nature of mixers. But yes, it’s a smart piece of kit very well though out.

I love my Cosmos. I wouldn’t say it’s one trick but it is very limited, in a good way.

It doesn’t need to be a wash at all. It can just be a series or long delays, or a granular instrument, or…. For instance, you set up a dialogue with it, control when it does and does not change, and add and subtract parts.

So I’m saying you need to learn it. It doesn’t take long but it takes some intention.

But it’s not a traditional looper, and if that’s what you want there are better options.

I had it and sold it. I liked the textures it delivered, but it was unusable in a song/project mostly due to no midi / tempo sync.

For anyone interested in the gig bag, here’s a photo that shows the inside of the bag, which Soma’s web site doesn’t show. Bags for other Soma gear are nothing more than branded totes, but this looks like a pretty serious bag to me.

I’ve been working out different routings for the COSMOS with Axe-FX for being able to switch instruments live. Here, the COSMOS gets the clean signal, which I think makes a nice combo with the heavily effected ones, which are a Continuum harp patch, then my Hammond electric melodica.

I just (sort of) finished assembling my noise synth box I’ve named “Pando”.
The main attraction is the Cosmos, what a fantastic device it is. It’s exactly what I needed to help surf the solar seas and just let things flow.
Here is a video I just made with it. Part of a new series of videos I plan on putting up.

I’m having some serious GAS for this thing, ever since i saw it first time.

This setup is so focused and purposeful. I am amazed. The jam was really cool also. A good reminder for me that it’s ok to get away from concrete sequencing all the time. Just plug some things together and let things go where they want. Cheers, thanks for sharing.

Thank you and you hit the nail on the head.
I spend a ridiculous amount of time listening and tweaking my sequences (especially on the Cycles which doesn’t have the preview trig option).
I just needed something to experiment with and “Pando” does just that.
I recently got an Osmose too so I’m going to toss that in the mix when possible.
Cheers!

Very cool. What’s the interface you are using for the iPad?

Another indulgent Osmose through Cosmos jam

thank you,
M Audio M-Track Duo.
It was stupid cheap, like $50 when I got it a few years ago.
I really just wanted something that I could output my ipad audio with and it seems to work just fine for that.

Nice! sounds like it belongs in a David Lynch movie

This thing looks really interesting. I have a mood mk2 on the desk and a torso s4 preordered. I imagine the combination of the 2 probs has me covered for this sort of sound but it’s intriguing nonetheless…

I had one. Its awesome for ambient, but found it hard to incorporate in songs with a beat. Sold it.

Just to share - this project started with an improvised track guitar with cosmos, then I overdubbed a bass track and drum track. It suits this particular style for me where I am not looking to sync everything tight. In fact a big part of the music is the edge of shambles rhythmic pulse. I like that kind of thing. The drums are Modor dr2 into octatrack with a mix of tap tempo sequence and hitting pads live.

I think you are covered but what I do like about the cosmos is you just let it run and it will do what it does. I have thought about s4 also as more tracks and sculptingnof the sound but more likely I will try running the cosmos into octatrack so I can LFO it and filter it and break it up a bit. Cosmos is cool but like Soma Stuff you approach it on its terms. Cosmos into s4 would be really cool now you mention it……hmmmm……

Thinking of replacing Cosmos with Microcosm. Have anyone did so and what are your thoughts?

First of all I want Microcosms’s “granular” algos and a bit more modern approach to looping and mangling. Another thing is size, Cosmos is a bit too big for touring and having it on the table.

I use it with electroacoustic sound sources (sound objects, wood instruments with piezo, voice ) and Buchla and Ciat Lonbarde modulars, and I believe Microcosm has a bit more to offer - deeper mangling, more options to transform pitch.

Also I believe Microcosm is a better for performance - a bit more ways to change sound dramatically in real time, better control over filter, pitch modulation.

I’m not interested in “ambient”, “clouds of reverb”, “freeze” and those type of sounds. More dry experimental mangling, tweaking knobs, making strange pitch sequences.

On the other side, Cosmos has really nice AD/DA converters, it really well build and has this kind of design which, despite being a bit “slow” and “old school”, helps in some situations (playing guitar and having looper on the floor for example ).

Of course it would be best to have both, but I’m afraid I have too many loopers already.
