Convert Stereo samples to Mono via iTunes import settings

iTunes users can convert a stereo track to a mono on import as explained on the Yahoo Answers website:

I used it and it works….I didn’t get down to the nitty gritty but it works.

I just use audacity. but it’s good knowing there are options. I know it’s unnecessary but i save all my files in 16/48khz mono b4 importing.

why not let C6 deal with it?

Some programs do sample rate conversion better than others. Some leave some pretty bad artifacts in the audio.

http://src.infinitewave.ca/ has a list of comparisons. Audacity is good, especially because it’s free but it looks like the best sound quality wise are Adobe Audition and Izotope SRC which is in products like Sound Forge Pro and Sample Manager.

Doing this way works because I have a stereo sample soundbank with an organized file structure built for use on my CFs for OT and within my laptop for all of my soft-grooveboxes and samplers…
I created a Mono soundbank folder and created a mirrored folder structure but without the samples…

I empty my computer’s Trash bin to clear the space,
Open iTunes,
Apply the Mono 16bit/48kHz Import settings;
Open the stereo Soundbank folder
Drag in the contents of the folder to my iTunes Music library,
Sort files by import date,
Playback and review the results…,
Delete the Mono files from the library
Open the Trash bin and move the contents to the folder in the Mono soundbank.

Sounds like a lot of work but it goes fast and you also get a chance to get rid of those bad/useless ones during the review…

sure, but I have stereo files and different bit rate in a structured file format which I use for my OT aswell. I just dump the files in C6 select merge R+L and there is no added file.

Correct me if i’m wrong on all this but I think when the destination in C6 is the Rytm the stereo files get converted to mono. You are basically doing a step that is not needed. Unless you are doing to cut down on the transfer speed then I guess that would help. I would think C6 might try to convert it anyway though but maybe i’m wrong. C6 seems a bit wonky so it wouldn’t surprise me if it doesn’t detect the correct format and skip the conversion process in the loading procedure.

sample conversion happens internally on the AR (i think it was mentioned in a yt video…)

nice

I have never seen a file load faster then another so I assume the conversion happens on all files even if the are formatted to the AR standard… but the is an utter guess!
