Controller: pads AND knobs

Crazy how all is aiming towards Ableton. I mean is it so complex to give the same functionalities (apart of the ones concerning a DAW of course). Same for the MIDI connexion: is the market dominated at this point to cut yourself from a consequent audience by omitting a simple connexion?

Any bad experience or?

At first sight it looks very similar to Maschine and siblings. As a smaller company you need to offer something different and special, unless you wanna compete with Native and others which are distributed all over the planet.

No bad experiences. Just don’t like the way they feel.
Beatstep is ok for it’s price point. I personally don’t think anything from Arturia would be more than 100$.
How they’re charging 600-900 for their own audio interfaces is lulz

You can’t expect a quality audio interface to be in that price range.
I mean if Behringer can charge hundreds…

Then is it quality i don’t know but i see regularly some Arturia products being praised.

I bought an EC4 for controlling to OT last year but I sold it beacuse I struggled to come up with the right use case. I think it is important to have a clear idea what parameters you want to control, and why. Also, “parameter jump” can be an issue, for example when changing a part and then changing something on the controller. With EC4 you can send a CC61 message to the OT and “match” the parameters on the encoder with the values sent by the OT.

Yes this is a big plus in favor of the EC4. Seems like some folks here were stuggling with the snap function of the encoders though.

I wonder: could a controller with pads be used with the OT where each velocity pad trigger a different slice in a sample chain?

Kind of recreating an instrument by triggering different velocity samples.

They’re big in the iOS world due to the built in usb hub

Yes, that’s what a lot of people do with the mpd232 (sample slices)
But don’t quote me. Of alll the members of this forum, I probably hate the biggest distain for the OT of anyone :stuck_out_tongue:

I guess it’s because OT owners have disdain for iOS

I use both and eat popcorn watching the battle

Drambo usually changes OT users minds about iOS. My issue is I’ve been an MPC dork forever and it’s just a workflow thing.

I hate touch interfaces for music. As good as some apps are, I don’t have fun using a tablet.

I think i saw someone on this forum using the MIDI Fighter Twister with an OT. Not badly priced for the number of knobs.
Does it compare to the EC4?

…how about a sensel morph…?

the most versatile controler of all…and all in one…at once…

I rarely touch it live.

According a review on YT it seems we’re not there for the velocity of the Sensel especially when it comes to finer drumming. I shall investigate a bit more maybe.

I’d like a controller for live use as well as sound design.

EC4 has the screen to help you remember which parameters the knobs control. But the push functionality of the encoders is global.

MFT can set the push functionality per encoder / page. But no screen - and also only USB connection so you need a USB midi host to use it with and OT or other hardware

Ah thanks for that information, no USB host for me, i won’t support that greedy trend

That’s the only negative on EC4 I think, it makes total sense to have different functions per setup or page, or per encoder. Not sure if it’s possible in a software update…

Yep it is deprivating the device from half of its commands…

IIRC Loopop mentioned asking it for a firmware update in its review… 16 months ago.
