Control synth live with midi while using the sequencer

Hi everyone, I’m hesitating between an OT and a DT to be the new brain of my set-up (currently controlled with Ableton live) and I’m wondering if the DT would allow me to play a synth (live) through midi on a dedicated track while I’m messing around in another track (sequencing an other synth or playing drum for example) ?
I don’t know if it’s clear, but basically I would like to know if I can control a synth with a midi keyboard routed in a midi track with specific midi channel, and that, independently from what i’m doing on the DT ?
I read here that it’s possible on the OT, but nether seen this for the DT, any ideas ?
Thanks !

Short answer for DT: no.

You CAN play one of the sample tracks (1-8) with an external midi keyboard regardless of what track is in focus (selected on the DT). Each track is its own midi channel.

HOWEVER, external synth, on midi tracks (8-16), then, no. You can only play the midi track that is in focus (selected). Each track does not have its own midi channel as the sample tracks do.

Thank you for your answer !
When you say > Each track does not have its own midi channel as the sample tracks do <
What do you mean ? Because it seems crazy to me : 8 midi track on a sequencer with only one midi channel ?
(I assume we are talking about Midi in here, not midi out ?)

Yeah, I’m talking about midi IN that the Digitakt listens to.

Your sample tracks 1-8 are each listening to their respective midi channel. i.e.: track 1 is listening to MIDI CH 1, track 2, MIDI CH 2, etc… these channels will control the respective tracks regardless of which track is in focus on the Digitakt.

Now, your MIDI channels, 9-16 are not able to do this. ONLY the MIDI channel identified as “auto channel” (default CH 14) will control the MIDI channel in focus. You can only control one MIDI track at a time (the one in focus) with a midi keyboard.

I hope that clears it up.

Yeah it’s very clear. Thanks a lot !
I’ll try to find an used OT then 'cause it seems more “tweakable” for the stuff I want to do ! Thanks again for your help
