I’m pretty much into minimalistic, glitchy house music or whatever you wanna name it (I prefer not to label music but just so we can communicate easily).
Do you think the OT will be suitable to make music in this kind of style? I don’t have any music released but I’ll post you one example of the style of my music.
I have already been doing this kind of stuff ITB and while is kinda doable I sometimes get bored with so much mouse clicking.
In most of my tracks normally there is not too much stuff going on but a few elements that keep morphing and I LOVE using odd track lengths to create the effect of the same loop going on forever but never quite sounding the same. Is it possible to do micro tuning in the OT? Like very small increments of pitch to sounds/loops. That would be really interesting.
While the OT is very limiting with the 2 stereo tracks out, I don’t pretend to do full tracks with it so I think I’m ok with that. My idea is just to develop a part of the track in the OT, record to the DAW and then overdub. Record. Repeat. That way I can process later to taste. That would be my workflow if I end up buying it.
Lately I’m just like: “yes order this machine, you need this” then a second thought comes: " but you are just going to waste 1200 € on machine when you can already do this stuff fine ITB". So I’m a bit confused a the moment
I work in Logic pro X, and also own a bit of pieces of kit including a modular synth, that I think could be really interesting to sample into the OT.
Sorry for the long post but I needed to get that out of my head.
I get the sense Elektrons are well loved, so if you shop well, s/h can help a bit and cover any potential losses if it’s not for you. There were two recent threads on this topic, so i’d scroll back through the threads to read the insights posted there - for some, there is no contest when it comes to the joy of working with a solid bit of dedicated hardware as opposed to the endless options (headaches too) of a soulless computer - the OT is flexible despite the predominance of certain genres on youtube e.g imho it should be part of something slightly bigger and not a device on its own, at least sample live into it or sequence with it etc - the notion of playing back ‘stems’ or whatever leaves me cold as it’s hardly engaging from a performance/viewer’s perspective - it’s very performance orientated, so make the most of it, very popular 'round these parts - needs time
I say go for it. I bought my first piece of hardware two years ago for the sole reason of getting away from the damn computer desk and mouse. I haven’t used a DAW once since then, but have acquired more gear, which continues to be far far far more fun to use than a computer ever was.
Saying that, I’m pretty sure I got mine for similar reasons to what you’re suggesting. It definitely makes experimenting with the interesting glitchy stuff, variations & whatnot that take forever to do with a mouse a helluva lot more fun.
…if you don’t expect it to be a daw substitute you gonna be happy. for sure…
taking new roads and directions is , what this machine is made for…
let’s put it this way…with an ot, a sounddesigner and electronic musician can finally feel like a guitar hero…touch that strings and tweak that audio…
despite the fact that everything you gonna get out of it, has it’s own character, has the power to surprise you and never could happen that way, even with a thousand mouseclicks…
+1… I still have to use a computer but my studio is mostly hardware… The last project I worked on with my avant-garde group “Random Faktor” was recorded in my studio completely non-computer. Alesis HD24 and a pair of Yamaha 02R96’s.
love boxes with knobs…
PS… just ordered my Octatrack… already some of the Youtube videos have been answering some of my pre-delivery questions.
