I’ve got a Machinedrum that I’m very happy with for percussion and droning sounds, but I’m finding it’s tricky to create melodies. For instance, I can create a decent bass sound by tuning a tom or bass drum but finding the right series of pitches to construct a melody is challenging, especially when I’m trying to match it to another MD-crafted melody.
Would the MnM be a better fit for these more harmonious (i.e. not percussive) elements such as bass, pads, etc? And if so, what are some potential setups to consider, such as MnM as master, MD as master, or simply clocked to one another? FYI I’m currently using Ableton to complement the MD with pads etc, but it’s not sequencing the MD.
they’re both perfectly able to be master or slave… it’s superkool… say you’re playing pattern A1 - then fire Off A2 (or any other) and the slave will follow - in sync!
I have MnM as master sending clock, start/stop, program change - to Electribe 2, OP-1, Eventide Timefactor, Roland R8, and circuit bent TR-626
(they all switch patches via Prg.change)
on top of that the MnM works as 6 track external sequencer for my Waldorf Q and Shruthi-1
plus it has it’s 6 internal tracks!
I’ve owned ALL Elektron boxes (some of them I had several times)
the only one I’ve kept is the MonoMachine
The Monomachine is specifically the bass, pad, melodic sibling of the Machinedrum. The workflow is very similar with the voices designed to handle a huge range of synthy sounds. Elektron is clever in giving a little bit of crossover functionality in all of their products (i.e. the Mnm can do a hint of some of the percussion of a MD & the MD can give a bit of the bass/melodic stuff from the MNM). You end loving the full range of capabilities on each device and then there’s that one little extra feature that is nice to throw on a track. That throw in feature (in your case, MD drum as a synth) can be fully explored and manipulated on one of their other synths (MnM).
In terms of syncing, just set one to send midi clock and one to receive. Just use the internal sequencers of each machine and they will play very nicely together.
Thanks, this is exactly what I was hoping to hear! I see a good deal on eBay I think I’m going to jump on right now
