Connecting midi for octatrack with beatstep pro and volca beats

Hi,

I have a connectivity query re: Octatrack mkii.
I am new to Octatrack and midi sequencing in general.

I want to use my Octa as the master clock and sequencer.
I want to use the beatstep pro just for the pads to play the volca beats.
I just can’t seem to get the Octatrack and BSP to talk to each other.

The BSP and Volca work fine with midi together, and i have a synth (AN1x) that is slaved to the Octatrack, works well.

I am using the default midi channel (10) of the volca across the BSP and Octatrack.

I know these kind of questions get asked a lot, but i couldn’t find an answer to my problem from forums i looked up.

I’m starting to get annoyed and really want to get these basics correct so i can learn the Octatrack.

Does anyone else have knowledge or experience with this set up?

Thanks.

Welcome to the forum!

There are many ways to configure your gear, but the way that I would choose is this:

MIDI connections

  • BSP MIDI Out to OT MIDI In
  • OT MIDI Out to AN1x MIDI In
  • AN1x MIDI Thru to VB MIDI In

On the BSP:

  • Set the User MIDI Channel number to match the Auto Channel number on the OT.

On the OT:

  • Set up a MIDI sequencer track to transmit on the same channel number as the Receive Channel on the AN1x.
  • Set up a MIDI sequencer track to transmit on the VB’s MIDI channel number (10).

When you select the MIDI sequencer track that is transmitting to the VB, the BSP’s pads should play the VB’s sound(s).

Try this out and report back.

There are many other settings on the various instruments that you may need to change depending on your exact requirements for your setup. Take it one step at a time and let us know if you need help.

Peter, thanks for your help.
I followed your clear instructions and the good news is the OT is syncing with the an1x and the VB. I get audio from an1x and VB controlled through the OT.
I can not yet produce sound from the bsp pads, though. I have the VB on midi channel 10 and an1 x on channel 2. The other channels are so far, unused. Thanks for helping me progress!

You posted three photos.

The first photo shows that the OT’s AUTO CHANNEL is set to 11. Therefore I believe that you should set the BSP’s User MIDI Channel to 11 to match it. The other channel settings in that photo are irrelevant because they refer to settings for incoming MIDI to the OT’s audio tracks.

When you select the MIDI sequencer track that is transmitting to the VB, the BSP’s pads should play the VB’s sound(s).
